Proper #COVID19 language:

We ARE in a pandemic.
The global health emergencies are over.

We are NOT post-COVID.
We are post-caring about COVID across public health agencies and the population.

The pandemic is NOT behind us.
Most COVID monitoring and precautions are behind us.

COVID IS still a risk.

And most importantly, we truly will not know the long-term impact of one infection, much less five or more infections, for another three to five years.

@augieray There are more important things going on than COVID. You can't put infinite money into it. We have to accept the risk.
@Ghurir You mean disabled and immunocompromised people have to accept the risk so that everyone else can pretend things are normal. How noble of you to volunteer us to suffer for the sake of cutting costs.

@eladnarra
We too are hit with COVID? Last I had viral pneumonia, coughing up blood. But what do you recommend, keep everyone locked up forever? Mental health issues and economic decline also take lives. How about other diseases, which got less attention during lockdown. How about the 2024-2025 flu season.

And it is not like nothing is being done, it just moved back on the priority list.

@Ghurir I'm sorry you went through that - I hope you're able to wear masks to hopefully prevent a repeat.

We don't need isolation - we need effective masks and mandating them in healthcare settings, ventilation upgrades for schools and other public facilities, filtration, testing, surveillance, etc. This would also help with other illnesses like the flu.

By putting COVID down on the priority list, we only increase the rate of new variants and fuck up our response to future potential pandemics.

@Ghurir @eladnarra I will never understand why folks get so weird about simple stuff like wearing masks. You can have a full social life and still accept the reality of this virus.
@Ghurir @augieray Don't volunteer me and mine to be sacrificed on your altar of risk!

@augieray

Earlier today I burst into tears because I watched an older video offhandedly mention doing something to pass the time while in lockdown.

It had been so long since I heard anyone say something like that.

It isn't over, and it's good to normalize talking about it.
