Feds delay closure of B.C.'s open-net salmon farms until 2029 | CBC News

The government had promised to phase out the farms by next year, but Fisheries Minister Diane Lebouthillier says she will allow aquaculture farms to renew their licences in what is a "responsible, realistic and achievable transition" away from the ocean farms.

I wonder what they'll call the next human pandemic; caused by keeping genetically engineered salmon in filthy, overcrowded conditions, which gives rise to a new pathogen that eventually becomes zoonotic?

I wonder how long before that pathogen infects wild salmon, and how many will be wiped out from that; on top of the struggles they're already having with loss of spawning grounds and increasing pollution in rivers and oceans.

I wonder how long before humans flip the script and blame wild salmon for the pathogen, like they are doing with bird flu now and wild birds.

I wonder how much longer this can go on.

Imo, the decision is solely kicking the can down the road.

This says to me the #LPC has seen a possible route to another majority or minority government. It requires the supporters of open pen salmon, or (I believe illegal, though I could be wrong) donations from the (foreign) industry in BC, or both.

(It also strongly suggests, to me, the LPC has determined they are going to lose #BC, so they do not care what BC voters say.)

It is #political calculus.

@504DR @chris

It is sort of flipping #environmentalists / #BCvoters the finger.

And reminds me, again, that M Trudeau has turned the government of #Canada into an #OilBaron, owning #pipelines, #oil extraction assets, and #OilWell and #GasWell remediation players.

For all I know, they also own #refinery assets.

@amgine @chris

Sadly, it's not just Canadian govt.
It's most all 1st world govts.

They are all owned by corps, and the govts defer to their wishes instead of their citizens.

This is why climate change will never be solved or even mitigated, despite the rosy picture they constantly portray.

We are all on own.
Plan accordingly.
