i’ve never liked using #Discord and have been taking more concrete steps to stop using it. for example, i use matrix.org as a general-purpose chat platform.

but, i play a fair amount of #MMO games, and the reliance on Discord for…nearly everything (!) within the genre is really hard to overcome. it used to be that Discord was the de facto voice chat option, but now more and more socialization/interaction takes place outside the game, siloed away in Discord. in addition to making the in-game social experience less lively, i find that it sometimes also comes with the subtle expectation that you are always on/available/contributing in Discord in order to be fully “present.”

i’d love to hear some suggestions for alternatives that folks have found useful, easy, and don’t have significant barriers to entry. like: use jitsi for voice chat.

please note that i am not looking for a “just join a guild/find like minded players!” response. i can/will/do, but i am also looking for concrete solutions or alternatives to what i view as an uncomfortable tech monopoly.

@daisy55 I know nothing about it but have seen people mention https://matrix.org as a discord alternative
