The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms exceeded its authority when it issued the rule outlawing bump stocks.
The court's ruling unwinds one of the few actions the federal government has taken in recent years to combat #GunViolence, as Republican opposition in Congress has made comprehensive #firearms restrictions highly unlikely. The case did NOT involve the #2ndAmendment, but was one of several before the justices this term involving #federal #regulatory #power.

In its ruling, the #SCOTUS majority said #BumpStocks do not qualify as #MachineGuns under a 1986 law that barred civilians from owning the weapons. The #Trump admin interpreted the #law to ban bump stocks in 2018, after a gunman used the devices to open fire on a Las Vegas music festival, ultimately killing 60 people in the deadliest #MassShooting in U.S. history.

#BumpStocks are a piece of molded plastic or metal that replaces the butt of a #rifle & the handle closest to the trigger. The piece allows a portion of the #gun to slide freely back-&-forth. The recoil from a shot causes the gun to “bump” between the shooter’s shoulder & trigger finger, causing shots to be fired in quick succession.
Rifles equipped w/ bump stocks can fire an estimated 400 to 800 bullets per minute, a rate approaching that of #AutomaticWeapons.
#GarlandVCargill turned on whether #BumpStocks meet the definition of a #MachineGun under a 1986 #law. Fed appeals courts were divided in 5 earlier decisions, before #SCOTUS.
Cargill’s case did not directly involve the #2ndAmendment, but was a test of the reach of a #FederalAgency to enact & interpret #regulations — a major crusade w/the current #SupremeCourt.
#Legal precedent says courts should DEFER to agency interpretations of ambiguous statutes if reasonable.

Karl Auerbach@Nonilex SCOTUS appears to have focused on the "single" part of the "pull trigger" language of the statute. They seem to read the statutory language as defining any firearm that requires a trigger pull for each shot - whether that pull is the result of a voluntary choice of a human mind or the result of a purely mechanical response to recoil shock via human bones/muscles - is not a "machine gun".
That's crazy. Bump stocks turn a single initiating voluntary trigger pull into a sequence of subsequent involuntary trigger pulls - the human becomes part of the "machine" part of that "machine gun". The only human volition in that machine system of repetition is that the human can break the cycling feedback loop by relaxing the trigger finger - just like a soldier can end a sequence of more traditional machine gun fire.

janamg@Nonilex not quite. the triggering mechanism is repeatedly engaged. a straightforward legislative response to this would be to redefine “machine gun” to be any combination of equipment, engineering, automation or skills that enable a weapon to fire more than 150 (or so) projectiles per minute.
@janamg it is a single pull. The thing is the shooter has to keep the trigger depressed w/that single pull.

SCOTUS said "there are multiple trigger pulls, one for each shot fired", which is technically accurate.
However, only the first pull was voluntary. The subsequent pulls occurred without conscious volition as the shooter's muscles, bones, tendons, and other body parts became part of the gun-machine.
Any decent legislative intent review would have led SCOTUS to a conclusion opposite of the one they chose to reach.
