FRC report day 5: From here the terrain really changed - the canyon widenes and there are number of arid short cuts to take.

With just enough dawn available, we ascended our first shortcut to see the sun rise from the neck. From here on we continued to the next water, called Cornelius Camp. It is a beautiful spot to camp, but we push on. The more we do on day 5, the less we have the next day.

We got to the last of the NWR water stashes, fill up, ate something, talked about the spiritual effect the canyon has on hikers. Then we ascended the arid Bandage Pass to arrive at a pool at Fool's Gold Corner. This is a traditional place to camp for the last night, but we pushed on.

We arrived at Big Bend, by lunch time. I went off to look for water and a camp site. Having found a small brackish pool, suitable for sourcing water for cooking we set off to setup camp late afternoon. As night set in, some people went scorpion hunting.

@ysb33r Incredible adventure! I’m really enjoying your posts.

@ysb33r
Wait, you're on a hike that is so dangerous that you have to go on a daily search for drinking water, but some of you feel that's not enough, they have to go hunting for scorpions too?

What crime did you commit that sentenced you to this punishment?

@kenkousen @ysb33r I wouldn't consider it dangerous. We just mitigate the risk factors.

@ysb33r

@ysb33r

I very effectively mitigate those risk factors by staying home

@ysb33r Good hike! 👍️
What for hunt scorpions? Just for fun?
@wthinker Indeed. Well camouflaged even under flashlight. They used a UV light.
@ysb33r I enjoy all the camp and waypoint names

@ysb33r

First good for you helping the slow one.

How much water is in the NWR stashes and how does it get there?

I guess its better to go find scorpions than for them to find you.

@HikerGeek There are two bigger tanks (3 & 4) about 1000lt each. They are reached by dirt track. For stash 4, the road is decent, but stash 3 is bad. For stash 1, 2 water us carried in daily by NWR staff. They camp at stash 2, 3. There are 2 people that carry water from 3 to 2 and two people that carry from 2 to 1.

It's hard work. Hikers will share snacks and food with them when they pass as a thank you gesture. Recently there was action of donating boots to them.

@HikerGeek One night when they went scorpion hunting a, they could not find anything. When they returned they found two under a shrub next to where their sleeping pads were 😁
