@Gigi apologies if this is rhetorical, but here's my take:

When someone believes themselves to be superior, reality will constantly disprove this. Therefore, in order to continue feeling superior, the person must "practice" their superiority by putting others down, continuously, their whole damn lives, or their sense of superiority breaks.
