BANKHEAD SHUTS DOWN NY; GIBSON LAUNCHES 33RD HR

Giants have the 2nd-most-productive offense in #1947league, behind only Brooklyn. You wouldn't have guessed that today, though: Dan Bankhead K'd 11 and held them to 2 hits. Josh Gibson went long.

The other day, I asked you to name the year Pat Scantlebury made the East All-Star Team.

It was 1946; Cliff got it right, which means today's #1947League game is brought to you by Cliff and by #CreedenceClearwaterRevival #CCR.

Based on the latest Seamheads statistics, in what year did Josh Gibson post his highest regular-season batting average?

One guess.

I chose Seamheads (the one that updates records more regularly, via research of old sources) bcs the top Josh Gibson batting average seemed unreal. I thought surely I'd have heard about this, that it must have been a recent discovery.

Nope. Multiple sources. He hit .466 in 1943!

Consider the terror and despair opposing pitchers must have felt in attempting to develop some strategy for dealing with Josh Gibson in 1943.

Whatever it was, it didn't work.

BA: .466
OBP: .560
SLG: .867
OPS: 1.427
-> OPS+: 283<-

Yes, this was all against NNL teams.

5 innings in relief today. 0R 0ER 7K 2H 3WK. Earned the W.
Hitting needs work. Went 1-5. R 2K stole home on a double steal. Had some very healthy hacks that I just missed.

Josh Gibson's .466 season average in 1943 is mind-blowing...but he doesn't hold the record for highest #MLB season batting average.

WHO DOES?

ESPN.com apparently didn't get the memo about Black Leagues stats being MLB stats (not sure what's up with that) -- but if you zoom over to baseball-reference.com you'll see that the single-season batting average record belongs to #1947League's very own Tetelo Vargas.

Attached: 1 image 1/x This #thread is for #blackmastodon, #MLB, and #baseball at large: You may have heard that a while back, in a long-overdue move, big-league baseball ruled that all official Black Leagues stats were now recognized as MLB statistics. As a (white) fan of the great players of the Black Leagues, I was excited by this move ... but I felt it was just the beginning. #1947League #apba

To create game results in #1947League, I use good old dice and cards and handwritten scoresheets, via the #APBA #boardgame.

If you're not familiar with #APBA, just think "D&D for #baseball nerds -- but equally viable in solo AND head-to-head play."

#1947League batting average race. Not too long ago Artie Wilson was up around .420. As the season has progressed (and as teams have started saving their best pitchers for Philly), the question of whether he'll finish above .400 has become more intriguing.

Side note on that batting race: CLE's Tetelo Vargas, a late acquisition, is at .393. He has a ghost of a chance to accumulate the 477 at-bats needed to qualify for the crown.

CLE has 66 games to play. Vargas currently has 145 at-bats. If the Tribe forced 50 or so 12-inning games.... ๐Ÿ™‚

#1947League hits leaders.

The difficulty of defeating Philadelphia with any regularity becomes evident once you realize that that lineup's #1 and #2 hitters also happen to rank #1 and #2 on this list. (For the record: Wilson draws a lot more walks than Walker does.)

#1947League doubles leaders.

Not a lot of drama in this race.

Way, way out in front is the Yankees' Willard Brown -- "The Hall of Famer that Time Forgot." He had the misfortune to notice, and be affected by, constant abuse and death threats during his brief AL career. #EseHombre

#1947League triples leaders.

Pittsburgh's Wilmer Fields (for whom Cooperstown can't seem to find room) will likely take this race. He also has a chance to hit .300 as a daily player AND notch 20 wins this year.

Now THAT'S a two-way superstar.

#1947League home run leaders. One of the questions I wanted this league to address was how many round-trippers Josh would launch in a full (for 1947) 154-game season. So far, he's tracking at 58.

An awesome number, but note that his card is based on 1946, his last season. Not peak Josh.

#1947League stolen base leaders.

Steele and Garcia neck-and-neck at the front of the pack. Bell, whose card is based on his 1945 season (when he was 42 [!] years old) is in third place.

(Note: To generate cards, I picked what I felt was the best player year available from 1945-1949.)

On to the pitchers: #1947League wins leaders.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Wins don't accurately reflect a pitcher's capacity to contribute to a team's success. Quality starts, ERA+, FIP, etc: all much more meaningful.

But: Garnett Blair, Ralph Branca, and Bob Romby are all badasses.

#1947League ERA leaders.

Admittedly, Brooklyn's Chet Brewer had an insane first half, but he just barely squeaked by on the IP required to qualify for this, and the Dodgers are so deep with great relievers they log fewer CGs than other clubs. He may not be there at the end. We'll see.
