PiWings mini drone looks interesting but a) it’s RP2040 + ESP for WiFi which is a frustrating mix and b) it’s SB Components so I’d rather not. What are some alternatives for a curious hacker? https://www.cnx-software.com/2024/06/07/piwings-2-0-tiny-drone-based-on-raspberry-pi-pico-and-esp8266-wifi-module/

@andypiper What are you interested in? This is some footage outside my house flying a little FPV drone that will fit in the palm of your hand. It runs open-source firmware on an STM32 micro controller, and the electronic speed controllers for the motors have their own little open-source firmware on tiny MCUs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKVgPefd1bY

@patshead that looks cool! ... what am I interested in, better question... basically it's as much for fun as anything, but I've nearly picked up a tiny drone a few times now (saw the Micro Done at #MakersCentral last month, saw this mentioned in feeds, etc). You mounted an Insta360 Go on it then?
@andypiper Usually we fly our bigger FPV "freestyle" drones with a GoPro strapped to the top, but in that video was an Insta360 Go on this tiny prebuilt FPV drone. You wear VR-style googles, and my view was through the cheap, low latency, analog camera on bottom. There's a steep learning curve to get flying, but this is like a video game in real life. We have littler ones that you can race around the house (https://x.com/patsheadcom/status/1202330856783781888).

@jasoncoon_ @dgambill @mbelles I'd say @jasoncoon_ is steering you in the right direction. The FPV racing drones are a lot like a video game, except in real life. This is a snippet of what I was doing with one of those TinyHawks last week.
