Some debts can never be repaid.

On June 6, 1944, Allied forces numbering 24,000 men landed on the shores of Normandy to rid Europe of the fascist German occupation.

Of those who landed, 4,414 gave their lives on those beaches. Thousands more died or went missing in the following operations.

The Normandy American Cemetery holds 9,387 graves of service members. When families come to visit, and also on special days like today's anniversary, volunteers take sand from the nearby beaches and rub it into the gravestones to highlight the names of the fallen and to honor their sacrifice.

Today, pause to remember those who charged into the teeth of the German defenses, both those who died and those who lived to tell their stories. And think about what you can do today to honor that sacrifice.

Because some debts can never be repaid.
