Immigration Measure Added to the Ballot in Arizona

Republicans are hoping a proposal revisiting some of the tough immigration policies of a decade ago will turn out their voters.

The New York Times

If voters pass the #border enforcement measure in Nov, it would mark a sharp U-turn for a state that has moderated its approach to immigration since an era when Sheriff #JoeArpaio of Maricopa County carried out #raids & traffic stops that *critics* criticized as #RacialProfiling. [not just critics, his policies were #cruel & #unconstitutional]

Federal Court Rules Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio Violated United States Constitution

PHOENIX – Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio relied on racial profiling and illegal detentions to target Latinos, a federal district court said today.

ACLU of Arizona

In recent years, #Arizona voters have approved in-state tuition rates for #undocumented students, & have rejected immigration hard-liners like #Arpaio, who was ousted in 2016, & #Trump.

But #Republicans say voters are ready to embrace their new #crackdown because they are fed up w/seeing thousands of *migrants* camped along the #border & the growing death toll from #fentanyl smuggled across the #border.

Opponents say the #Arizona ballot measure will do nothing to improve #border #security or prevent #asylum seekers from arriving. Instead, they say, it will replicate the paranoia & turmoil that #Latino & #immigrant communities experienced after Gov #JanBrewer signed #SB1070, a divisive state #immigration-enforcement #law passed by #Republicans in 2010 that came to be known as the “show me your papers law.” That law sparked years of protests & litigation, & has since been partially struck down.

#Arizona’s new proposal is similar to #laws passed by #Republicans in #Texas & #Iowa that challenged the #federal government’s exclusive #power to enforce #immigration laws. The #Biden admin has sued to block the TX & IA laws, calling them #unconstitutional.

Politicians on both sides said they expected the proposed AZ #law to face #legal challenges if voters pass it.

#WhiteNationalism

The difference in #Arizona is that the fight is playing out not in a solidly #RedState, but in a closely divided battleground. #Political experts say the #immigration enforcement measure could have unpredictable ripple effects on races for president & for control of the #UnitedStates #Senate.

On Tues, the AZ House, which is under #Republican control, is expected to give the proposal final approval for the ballot.

…AZ’s pop is 32% #Latino, & many voters still have searing memories of #SB1070.

The measure, which needs a majority to pass, is called the Secure the #Border Act. Along w/the #policing provisions, it’d also increase #prison sentences for anyone who sells #fentanyl* that results in an #overdose death, & would make it a #state #crime for #undocumented workers to provide false info to the #EVerify screening system.

[*fentanyl ingredients are from #China not #Mexico]

@Nonilex

I wonder what, if any, the latest Biden border policy will have on support for this law?

@Nonilex more performance “art” from a narrow majority proposing consistently bad legislation. If they had to get signatures like normal voter initiative ballot proposals, none of their stuff would make it to the ballot.
@Nonilex take a look at Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco

@RYK oh I know

@Nonilex

The measure should be coupled to a tax increase.
