Fun fact: a few years ago, when our small apartment became too small for four people and we were looking for a new place to live in #Takamatsu, we scouted a few neighborhoods. Despite being far from everything and quite inconvenient, this neighborhood made the short list. Why? A beach... a real beach!!! and one that's not even crowded, possibly ever!!!!

@DavidBHimself A beautiful spot. Probably impossible to store a kayak in Japanese house/apartment space, but is there an opportunity to rent one nearby and paddle over to and around the islands?

It's totally possible to store a kayak in a Japanese house (less convenient in an apartment, although some buildings have storage space) but they're rare. I think they're just not part of the culture. Also, the sea is not the best places for kayaks, lots of treacherous currents (not sure if it's dangerous for a kayak or not) and a lot of traffic between ferries and cargo ships.
Now with that being said, I know of a kayak place on Shodoshima, the biggest island in the area, but they usually stay around the island itself. Although, the one time I met the owner it was on another island and they kayaked there (but they know what they do because they had to cross what basically is a sea highway - where about 1000 big boats pass daily)

@DavidBHimself Interesting - I haven't tried one myself, though I do own a canoe.

I suspect they might be somewhat impervious to currents and tides being so flat and riding upon the surface. All that traffic though must indeed be a challenge.
