Had a fabulous #FieldTrip today with Long Now Boston folks. We toured the #DeerIsland wastewater treatment plant. Yes, Long Now Boston is a nerd club.

But it gives me hope: some really smart, thoughtful, and capable people are keeping our infrastructure going and planning for #ClimateChange--no matter what the other noise around is.

Great tour, take one if you get the chance. #BostonMA

Of course, the highlight of the tour was seeing the actual egg digesters up close. You can't take photos inside, but we were right underneath one of them.

These use bacteria from human waste to chew up stuff that remains in the water at this point. On average, a piece of stuff that comes in spends 20 days in this breaking down.

If you fly into #BostonMA you see this dozen eggs and always wonder what they are about.... Now I know.

Bucket list item ✅

Also: they BEG everyone to stop using the "flushable" wipes, which are not flushable.

They are like the worst thing ever and damage their equipment more than anything else in the system.

@mem_somerville This bizarre explosion of things that sound like toilet paper but absolutely aren't drives me up the wall.
@Craigp Before we understood it, my housemate and I spent $800 on plumbing...
@mem_somerville I wish they could sue the makers of the product for damages
@nirak They said they are trying to work with them, but with little success so far.
@mem_somerville I believe those are heavily correlated with the increase in “fatbergs” in sewer systems. [shudder]
@rmd1023 @mem_somerville *travels back in time to give passengers on “Titanic” a gruesome choice. Their faces contorted in a rictus of horror, they all point at the ICEberg and the timeline is unchanged*
@rmd1023 The other thing that makes it through the whole system, to this tank where they pull off the floaty "scum" part: those little produce stickers. Driving them nuts.
@mem_somerville Well, that's disappointing, not alien technology! 🤪

@ai6yr We were joking about filming in there, and they said that something Cameron Diaz was in was filmed there....

But it would totally work for sci-fi.

@mem_somerville This looks really cool... Will have to try to get out there at some point.

@asseenfrombuckhill It was totally worth it.

Takes some planning, though, because you have to send IDs to them for Homeland Security checks and that is a bit of a pain. But as long as you know going in.

That said: the day we went, the woman we worked with put someone not from our group on the tour. We were fine with that. You might be able to try that route.

@mem_somerville didn't know the local org existed, signed up for the newsletter - thanks! huzzah further nerd clubs :) https://www.longnowboston.org/connect

@mem_somerville is TLN not using meetup any more? wish I'd known about this trip, though I may well have just missed it

@drawnonglass It was a special "members only" one. Because you have to submit security documents, there's a different deadline than usual, etc. We just used Eventbrite.

And people had to kind of know me and trust me to send their license and personal info forms to me. It required Homeland Security confirmation.

We didn't make it a wide open one due to the special steps and details.

@mem_somerville That's fair. The org I work for just did a member trip to Deer Island (which I did not get to go on) , so seeing the photos pinged my interest
