Because Voyager 1 is so far from Earth, it takes almost 23 hours for a command to reach it at the speed of light, and the same for a response to reach us back, for a total of close to 50 hours.

Which means that interactions with Voyager 1, currently around 15 billion miles away, are still faster than many Microsoft Windows updates.

@lauren As long as they can continue to spy on me and deliver ads to my desktop OS in a timely manner, I'm happy.
@JollyDigital Your Google recruiting email will arrive shortly.
@lauren I'm afraid they know all my secrets too!
@JollyDigital Actually, my times working inside Google gave me a great deal of faith in their privacy and security processes.
@lauren NTM updating any recent AAA game...
@lauren
Somewhat exaggerated, but so on point

@lauren

The best we can hope for is Windows never being the core OS in a spacecraft.

@the_Effekt @lauren but why not? Surely your new Copilot can land your spacecraft better than Clippy ever could...
@lauren I imagine Voyager 1 can *choose* whether or not to get Windows updates. "Sorry, can't hear you, I'm not in your Solar System right now, try again later, bye."

@lauren A few years ago Windows Update got a great new feature where it could download the updates overnight and reboot in the morning.

And then wait for you to get to your computer before it did the really slow part of actually applying the update.

@lauren
Checks out. Microsoft thinking that recall is a good idea is farther away from reality than voyager 1 from earth. That’s why the update is slower.
@lauren Ah but does Voyager then NEED to be rebooted because [...checks release notes...] "Notepad.exe has been updated" ??
@lauren First LOL I've had all day

@lauren I remember the early days of Quake on dialup. My ping was about this.
@lauren How long does it take to install and run Doom on Voyager 1? #itrunsdoom
