Oregon state Rep. Maxine #Dexter won the Democratic primary for Oregon’s 3rd Congressional District, the Associated Press projected.

Dexter defeated six other primary opponents, including attorney Susheela Jayapal
— the sister of Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.)
— and Gresham City Councilor Eddy Morales, to advance to the general election.

She is heavily favored to win the solidly blue district in November’s race to succeed Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.), who is retiring after nearly 30 years in Congress.

Voters head to the polls in consequential House races in Oregon and California

Five states are holding elections on Tuesday that could play a consequential role in deciding the balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives this year and next.

The Washington Post

State Rep. Janelle #Bynum is projected to win the Democratic nomination in the race for Oregon’s 5th District, according to the AP.

She will face Republican Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer, who won there by fewer than two points in 2022.

Bynum has a history of defeating Chavez-DeRemer,
having done so in 2016 and 2018, when each ran for the state House.

Bynum was recruited by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) and ran with the endorsement of Oregon Democrats, including Gov. Tina Kotek, Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, Rep. Andrea Salinas, as well as the Congressional Black Caucus.

California State Assemblyman Vince Fong is projected to win the special election runoff in California’s 20th District.

He will serve out the remainder of McCarthy’s term.

In November, Fong and Mike Boudreaux will again face off in an election to decide who will represent the district in Congress for a full, two-year term.

The 20th District, which includes portions of Fresno and Bakersfield, is one of the most conservative in California.

Republicans hold a narrow majority in the House, and the addition of McCarthy’s successor will fill one of a handful of vacancies in the chamber.

Fong ran with the endorsements of McCarthy and former president Donald Trump.

• Fulton County District Attorney Fani T. Willis,
who emerged as a national figure after bringing criminal charges against former president Donald Trump,
won her Democratic primary on Tuesday, in her first ballot appearance since the inception of the high-profile election interference case.

• Trump was back in court in New York on Tuesday for his hush money trial. Closing arguments are expected next week.

• Trump narrowed President Biden’s fundraising advantage in April, raising more cash in collaboration with the Republican National Committee than his Democratic rivals. But Biden and the Democratic National Committee still have a strong cash advantage
