In the past three months, #Russia has begun actively transferring military personnel and mercenaries to #Libya, according to Verstka’s findings. These forces are primarily concentrated in eastern Libya, a region under the control of Khalifa Haftar, the commander of the Libyan National Army and a Kremlin ally.

A source within a Libyan security agency reported that at least 1,800 Russian military personnel have arrived in the country in the last two weeks alone

‘A big mess is brewing’ Thousands of Russian fighters are flooding into Libya, raising concerns over what the Kremlin might be planning — Meduza

Russia has been bolstering its military presence in Libya for the past few months, according to a joint investigation from the independent outlet Verstka and the All Eyes on Wagner project. Libya has been mired in civil war since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, and Russia has long been accused of meddling in the conflict. Now, the Kremlin appears to be shipping more military equipment to Libya and the surrounding region and redeploying regular troops disguised as mercenaries, along with recruits from Wagner Group’s Africa operations.

Russia's foreign minister again visits Africa, this time in Guinea, as some ties cool with the West

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has arrived in Guinea on his latest visit to West Africa. Coups and growing discontent with traditional allies like France and the United States have contributed to a shift toward Moscow by some countries in the region. Lavrov has visited the African continent several times in the past couple of years as Russia seeks support — or at least neutrality — from many of its 54 countries amid Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. It is not immediately clear what African nations Lavrov might visit next.

Jihadis from Africa’s Sahel have crossed into Nigeria’s north, a new report says. A lot is at stake

A new report says there is mounting evidence that jihadi fighters who had long operated in Africa’s volatile Sahel region have settled in northwestern Nigeria after crossing from neighboring Benin. The report by the Clingendael Institute think tank says the militants have been moving to wealthier West African coastal nations from the Sahel. The report released Wednesday says the jihadi fighters settled in a national park in Nigeria's Niger state. It warns of the possible consequences from a link between fighters from the Lake Chad region and the Sahel.

France's military is being ousted from more African countries. Here's why

It’s been a tumultuous month for France and its relationship with former colonies in Africa, as its influence on the continent faces the biggest challenge in decades. Even as Paris was devising a new military strategy that would sharply reduce its permanent troop presence, two of its closest allies struck a double blow. Chad said it was ending defense cooperation to redefine its sovereignty. And Senegal’s new president said it was “obvious” that soon there wouldn’t be French soldiers there. It follows the ousting of French forces in recent years by military-led governments while powers like Russia gain influence on the continent.

Ukraine Opens “Second Front” In Africa! Russia Claims Its A Direct Response To Kyiv’s Failure In Warzone

Russia has once again accused Ukraine of escalating tensions on the African continent, claiming that Kyiv’s alleged support for militant groups in Mali and Niger constitutes a “second front” in the ongoing conflict with Moscow.  Igor Gromyko, Russia’s Ambassador to Mali and Niger, told TASS that Ukraine’s involvement in African conflicts is a direct response to its failure on the battlefield against Russian forces.  The accusations of Ukraine supporting “terrorism” in Africa are not new. Back in August, Russia had already charged Ukraine with opening a “second front” in Africa.  Mali and Niger, both governed by military regimes that came

Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso: How a triumvirate of military leaders are redrawing West Africa’s map

The military juntas of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso signed a treaty of confederation Saturday bringing together 72 million people into the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). It’s a decision, they say, that will not only allow the three nations to wipe the scourge of jihadist violence from their countries, but to build a new economic alliance that will reshape West Africa.
