We need to get rid of the idea that ads can pay for literally everything online. It’s a fundamental part of the reason everything is so broken.

I can't be 100% certain but I don't believe that I've ever bought something as a result of an online advert.

There have been ment times that I've left a page/site because of the adverts.

Surely I'm far from unique in this so ads cannot really be working as expected and they?

@Guy @maikel @johnlynch @onepict I think there’s a “sweet spot” for the number of times you see a product. Even if you do t buy, it’s either a product introduction or a product reinforcement in your mind. It’s “coverage.”

And I hate it.

Definitely with you on the “I’ve not bought because you ruined my experience” mindset.

@johnlynch @onepict Indeed. And we must consider funding technology for the coming good from the commons.

Yes, ads themselves are toxic, drive toxic business models and toxic products, partly through centralising power, and of course by hiding better products and undermining trusted networks (eg person-to-person).

Aral, do you recall me urging you to look at Safe Network a few years ago because of these issues, to bring your UX ideas?

I know you have your own approach as well but hope that now it is happening it will be interesting to you - recently renamed #Autonomi

@johnlynch @onepict

@happyborg @johnlynch @onepict Yep, do recall. It’s on my radar; I do check back every now and then. Will make some time to do again this week :)

@aral
Cool. They just published https://docs.autonomi.com which may be a good place to start. Details of current testnet, which anyone can join to run nodes or upload/download etc are at https://forum.autonomi.community, along with our friendly helpful community. 😁

I'm finishing a demo that publishes/views versioned websites on Autonomi.

Good to see you still active too.

Concurrent with that, we need to pay for the things we value.

@nobilis @johnlynch @girlonthenet Well we often need to be prepared to pay a bit extra for them. Because we can afford it, and they will also be valuable to people who can't.
@johnlynch #dollarnomics. I wrote a guide :) A couple of them, in fact. It won’t work for everything, but it will, if all parties agree to using it, get most ads out of most of what we consume on the internet. Are there really more than 20-30 things in your life you’d need to pay for? I think the hashtag should find my links. Info is free :)
