@acid @mspro @jascha This got me thinking. 👆
@janl don’t make me chose between my children! 😭

@janl I'm someone who understands there's a difference between westerns (Star Wars) and dramas (Star Trek).

One is not greater or lesser than the other. But the optimism of both should indeed be encouraged.

@joannejacobs @janl
wonderful said.
For me: Star Wars == Star Trek because its a complete different world and is only compared because both franchises are beginning with "Star“ and having spaceships. its like comparing starsky & hutch and modern family.
@joannejacobs @janl I am someone who watched the original material/inspiration for Episode IV, spoiler it's not Western, and thinks that universe got too dark
@xgebi @janl even so, a western it became.
@janl I'm not sure optimist is right to describe me, but I try to have a little hope.

@janl Stargate uber alles

I'm a realist :)

@unlucio @janl if you were a realist, you would have chosen The Expanse. 🚀
@fnordius @janl I read about it, I tried watching it, but I was never able to pass the 1st episode. I just fall to sleep whenever they start fucking in zero-g 🤷‍♂️

@janl The quality of anything in the Star Wars universes is directly proportional to its distance from George Lucas.

I don't know what the equivalent rule is for Star Trek. For a while, it was inversely proportional to distance from Gene Roddenberry but some of the newer things are at least as good as things he was directly involved in.

@david_chisnall I don’t know. Lucas had too much of a hand in episodes I-III. And those movies are really unwatchable. He needs to be balanced out by people that can say no to him.
@CrisLuengo Exactly. The things Lucas was directly involved in are worase then anything he was not. He was, for example, involved in the Star Wars Christmas Special, yet not involved in the Heir to the Empire series of books.
@david_chisnall Oh! I just now realized that I interpreted your post the wrong way around. I guess expectations, with all the hate Disney SW is getting. :)

@janl

Rebel Moon > Star Wars + Star Trek (I'm a nihilist)

Ok, ok, I'll show myself out...

@janl It's not optimist vs. pessimist. It's that Star Wars is an adolescent coming-of-age story and Star Trek is a drama for adults.
@janl Conclusion so far: there are more Star Trek fans on Mastodon, and there are more optimists on Mastodon.
@janl Star Trek is a horribly dismal dystopia presented as if it were a utopia for some reason. At least in Star Wars the revolutionaries win sometimes.
@foolishowl that has nothing to do with my theory, but thanks for your input
@janl To the polling station went:
72% optimists
28% pessimists
@janl interesting! how’d the theory pan out?
