Pro-Palestinian protests dwindle to tiny numbers and subtle defiant acts at US college graduations

Despite pro-Palestinian protests roiling some U.S. college campuses this spring, graduation ceremonies are going off largely peacefully so far. Only about 30 students at Duke University stood up against comedian and pro-Israel entertainer Jerry Seinfeld, who received an honorary doctorate Sunday. The vast majority of the 7,000 students there took no overt action as the crowd let out a mix of cheers and boos. At Emerson College in Boston, some students took off their graduation robes and left them on stage. Others emblazoned “free Palestine” on their mortar boards. But so far commencement exercises have been largely uneventful.

@rameshgupta Didn't read about *any* Hamas supporters in that article, just pro-Palestinians.

Being against civilians getting killed is not supporting Hamas. And it's not like they could overthrow Hamas when Hamas has the guns and the civilians don't.

Please don't conflate supporting Palestinians with supporting Hamas. It makes you look silly.

>> Please don't conflate supporting #Palestinians with supporting #Hamas. It makes you look silly.

Only 7% of #Gazans blamed #Hamas for their suffering. 71% of all Palestinians supported Hamas’s decision to attack #Israel on #Oct7

I might be too “silly” to construct a #VennDiagram of Hamas vs Palestinians, but I am not completely bereft of knowledge to conclude that those are not disjoint sets.

Poll: Hamas Remains Popular Among Palestinians

Palestinian support for Hamas in the West Bank and Gaza remains high, according to a Palestinian poll released on March 20. That support has increased since the Iran-backed terrorist...

@rameshgupta If you don't have a gun and someone comes around and says, "Do you like the people with guns", most people will say, "Yup!".

Because Hamas is punitive too.

So I think that stat is fickle. So I dug into FDD.org, and found out that they are neoconservative and are known for false information.

I don't buy what they're selling. The idea that they would have a statistic for that seems disingenuous.

Can you see someone taking a poll after October 7th? Really?

Common sense.

Supporting #Palestinians is supporting #Hamas by proxy, as it is THEY that have let Hamas fight #inTheirName instead of denouncing them & distancing from them. They need to take their destiny in their OWN hands with a fresh manifesto along the lines of #inOurName.

Please click through both hashtags if you want more discussion of why Palestinians are mostly responsible for their own plight, and how blaming others will not ameliorate their situation.

So, you agree that the sets are not disjoint.

The question then becomes what is the distribution of those who are at the intersection because of fear or ideology.

As for the set #Palestinians minus #Hamas, remember that there is a set of #Israelis minus #Likud too.

Click through the hashtag #SocietiesAreNotHomogenous. I try not to be “silly,” but I’m not infallible. I do relish cogent discussion, even with divergent points of view. Thanks

>> I actively support the Palestinians right to exist in a moment when they they are simply *running* to exist.

Incomplete knowledge is a dangerous thing. One can fall in a hole and endanger world security unknowingly.

#Jews have been running to exist for millennia, having been displaced multiple times ➡️ https://mastodon.social/@rameshgupta/111494007586354401

This post also puts #India-#Pakistan in context.

#Hamas charter calls for the elimination of Jews and #Israel. They too face an existential struggle.
