Russian offensive on Kharkiv forces some 1,700 civilians to flee

The Russian Defense Ministry says Moscow’s forces have captured five villages in a renewed ground assault in northeastern Ukraine. Associated Press journalists in the city of Vovchansk described multiple buildings destroyed after Russian airstrikes and barrages of Grad rockets. The villages lie in a contested “gray zone” on the border of Ukraine’s Kharkiv region and Russia. Ukrainian journalists reported that the villages of Borysivka, Ohirtseve, Pylna and Strilecha were taken by Russian troops on Friday. Russia said the village of Pletenivka was also taken. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says fighting was still ongoing in the settlements of Strilecha and Pletenivka, as well as Krasne, Morokhovets, Oliinykove, Lukyantsi and Hatyshche.

@rameshgupta

Russia is waging a horrible war of aggression, but the situation is still quite different, which might explain the differences in public prception.
First of all I want to make clear that I despise Hamas, their theocratic-fascistoid project and their terroist actions.

a) asymmetry. Ukraine is giving a hell of a fight to the Russian military.
Hamas vs IDF is more a david vs goliath situation. People tend to protest in favour of the underdog.
b) government's position: the western countries are already supporting Ukraine with weapons. There could be done more, but that's more complex. What should students protest for when their governments declared Russia already a rogue state?
c) the civilian casualties in Ukraine differ are much lower than the continued massacre in Gaza. Yes, Bucha was horrible and I wouldn't like to live in a Russian-occupied regiin either, but it is obvious that civilians are considered differently in both places.
d) in one thing you are right:
The Israel-Palestine conflict has already many years of history, so many people have some kind of opinion. And there is a narrative and solidarity structures.

But let me ask you a question: when was the last time you protested against a war? How did you get there? How did the movement work structurally?

>> I want to make clear that I despise Hamas

Everything that follows belies this

>> Hamas vs IDF is more a david vs goliath situation

Oh the irony in choosing David vs Goliath for exactly these two opponents!

>> People tend to protest in favour of the underdog

You don’t believe #Ukraine is the underdog in the #Russian war?

>> western countries are already supporting Ukraine with weapons

Is #Iran not supporting #AxisOfResistance (#Hamas, #Hezbollah, #Houthi) with weapons?

Our governments have also declared #Hamas a terrorist organization. It is also a rogue “state” having wrested power away from #Fatah in a bloody civil war in #Gaza in 2007. They don’t represent all #Palestinians (#WestBank).

#StudentProtestestors could fight for and protest the rise of #fascism in own country rather than conflict in another ➡️ https://mastodon.social/@rameshgupta/112424962596109267

This is my hope and my sincere request (see above) to young #Biden delegates, #GenZ activists, #StudentProtestors, and the #DemocraticParty.

#Students should organize massive rallies and #StudentProtests to use all their might to fight the fire in their OWN homes before donning fancy T-shirts to #boycott and #divest in foreign holdings.

Don’t let #Putin stooge #JillStein spoil #Election2024 like she did in 2016.

Keep #BDS #BDSMovement #BDSHorseshoe in check.
