I lol-ed.
@BootsChantilly Then 9/8 should be Markos Vamvakaris day. Sorry. I'll get my bouzouki...

@BootsChantilly My fave song to play while in school jazz stage band was Take 5. I played saxophone in school jazz stage band (alto & soprano sax).

Dave Brubeck was also an activist & supporter of human/civil rights. He canceled a tour in US South & refused to replace Eugene Wright with a white guy❤️🎶

@msquebanh @BootsChantilly My daughter had the immense privilege of playing with Brubeck in her college orchestra before he passed. What a legend.
@msquebanh Oh, thank you for posting that!
@BootsChantilly You're welcome. I've been a Brubeck fan for years. I fell in love with his musical talent, first. I grew to respect & admire his strength & bravery, against white supremacy & how he refused to let racists bully him. I respected how he stood up for Eugene Wright & every black musician who racists tried to erase. Dave Brubeck was not just an amazing musician. Dave Brubeck was a beautiful human being, who stood on the side of humanity & he was an environmentalist too 💗✌️💗
@msquebanh All true—and 💯💯💯!
@msquebanh @BootsChantilly Welp, someone mentioned it so time to stop what I'm doing and carve out 7 minutes in my day.
@msquebanh @BootsChantilly
I read or heard that Brubeck nearly wasn’t admitted to the program at University of the Pacific because he couldn’t sight read. His fellow students knew that was because he had such poor eyesight, not for lack of talent, so they rallied and convinced the faculty to accept him into the program. Guess that worked out pretty well.
@sjharder I never knew that--thanks for sharing! @msquebanh
@BootsChantilly The perfect meme DOES exist! ❤️❤️❤️😂😂🤩🌈🦄

@antoinnesterk This is very cool, btw—thanks for sharing.
@BootsChantilly Was fortunate to see Brubeck at the Syracuse Jazz Festival. He was 86 at the time, and the man still had it.
@BootsChantilly true, but 5/4 is in April

@sethb @BootsChantilly

Mr Brubeck was American, so he also did count months wrong.

@BootsChantilly the mission impossible theme is also 5/4 :)
@BootsChantilly Just one day off from Karl Marx
@BootsChantilly but Keith Haring is indeed May the 4th

@BootsChantilly Happy Youth Day! As some people might be aware, today is the 95th anniversary of the #MayFourthMovement, where, in Beijing, #StudentProtests kicked off the modernisation of China.

Well, that’s what 5/4 means to my parents. May the Fourth be with you.

@BootsChantilly it's his through his teachers and influences...Dave would never agree to this...
@BootsChantilly I’m gonna have to take five fo(u)r this… 🤔
@BootsChantilly I live a few blocks away from where he lived. Very cool house.
@BootsChantilly it can be both. i am large, and contain multitudes.

@BootsChantilly

Take five, everywhere but USA celebrates Dave Brubeck Day on the 5th of April.

@jeremy_pm @BootsChantilly As Brubeck (and Desmond) lived in the US, we show respect for their chosen date format.

@VisualStuart

Fair enough. I guess Americans get confused when people talk about a piece of music's metre, shouldn't it be known as the US imperial measure. 🤣

@BootsChantilly

@BootsChantilly Still nerds. Just music nerds instead of movie nerds.
@BootsChantilly
That was last month, darling.
@BootsChantilly
Absolutely, but for most of the world 5/4 is fifth of April.
@Walrus
@pthane True, but I think the joke still works, since Brubeck was American. @Walrus
@BootsChantilly
Asked my husband who this is. Just got a lesson on "Take Five" and the difference between 5/4, 4/4, and 3/4. And a of bit a tune.
You all are determined to keep the Fediverse educational, aren't you?
@ldmay65 Sounds like your husband is, too! That's awesome! 🙂
@BootsChantilly May the fourth be with him too!
@BootsChantilly April the 5th? That was a month ago:)
@BootsChantilly Folks in this thread: I gently propose we stop arguing about whether Dave Brubeck Day should fall on May 4 or Apr 5, when we can have it fall on both so that he gets TWO days, and as we all know, "the more the merrier" certainly applies to unmatched auditory delight that is the noble genre of jazz. Take Five makes me feel animated in a way no other song does, or like getting down to business. Surely only a mere 2 days would not suffice, so why argue about "which ONE" it must be?
