Story by Rebecca Lopez
April 28, 2024

"Ranchers here say their cattle, fish and horses are dying and getting sick because of a fertilizer spread on nearby farmland.

"The fertilizer is made from treated human waste from the city of Fort Worth.

"The company that makes the fertilizer says its products meet government standards.

"County officials have launched a criminal investigation, and ranchers are suing, saying runoff from the fertilizer has made their land useless."

@DoomsdaysCW

Most people would be shocked by how common it is for cities to spread #sewagesludge and #biosolids on farmland in surrounding rural areas.

Biosolids - Wikipedia

@BohemianPeasant @DoomsdaysCW It would probably be a wise thing, if the sewage was exclusively human waste, and had been composted to reduce the pathogenic possibility. My understanding, however, is that this is from an industrial city and there are industrial pollutants in it that should never be spread on cropland.
@DoomsdaysCW @BohemianPeasant so the rallying cry is what: less “biosolids”, more dry toilets and composting?
@melanie @BohemianPeasant Things need to be separated. And yes. I've had friends who use humanure (properly composted) and they're still alive. I mean, what did we do before toilets? (Yeah, sometimes died of dysentery.) But it goes to show that we should be aware of where ALL our waste ends up.

@DoomsdaysCW

msn links don't work at all or not reliable.
I can't open the article but am redirected to something else.

@DavidBruchmann @DoomsdaysCW

MSN links are usually just click-grabbers which redirect to actual news sites. They're hopelessly broken for me too, so I tend to avoid all MSN links as a result.

@BobLefridge @DavidBruchmann I'll keep that in mind. TY!

@DoomsdaysCW @BobLefridge

Thanks, usually the original link should be mentioned, you could replace it, if that's the case.

@DoomsdaysCW I had no issues going straight to the MSN article from the link. I can’t imagine why this story is not major news in many US oriented news sites. Pretty depressing.
