Stop URANIUM MINING near the Grand Canyon

A #uranium mine just began operations -- mere miles from the #GrandCanyon and all of the wildlife that call it home.

The mine poses an imminent threat to the springs that lead directly into the Grand Canyon itself, along with the area's #wildlife and the only drinking water source for the #HavasupaiTribe. That's especially short-sighted as the Southwest struggles with a historic #drought, making every drop of water count.

First Uranium Mines to Dig in the US in Eight Years Begin Operations Near Grand Canyon - Inside Climate News

The push for more nuclear energy and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has spiked uranium prices, leading mines for the element to begin operating again in the U.S. despite long-term environmental and health impacts.

This one really stings. The mine's operations are taking place entirely within the new #GrandCanyonNationalMonument, which we called for and President #Biden just declared a few months ago.

The president's declaration means no new #mining leases are allowed. But the #PinyonPlain mine's owners are exploiting a 150-year-old law that makes it hard for the government to cancel old mining #leases.

Fortunately, we still have one card we can play: Gov. #KatieHobbs can rescind the mine's permit.
