Did a first gear test ride today, a whole 55km! Almost everything, at least the larger items, didn't pack things like toiletry, chargers, cables etc random small stuff. Went really well. Had to adjust the seat pack a few times to avoid it hitting the tire on bumps. Not sure if it's the model or the shape of my bike but there isn't a lot of space between the tire and the bag, so not much possibility in strapping heavier stuff on top. The sleeping bag strapped on top seemed fine as an addition though.

Fork bags were filled with tent (without poles), sleeping mat and pillow. At the front a handlebar bag for my camera and also strapped in front of that an action cam, which I had trouble mounting on the handlebar in a way that the camera bag wouldn't be included in the videos. Didn't seem to jump around too bad but will need to check out the videos.

Backpack had too much stuff, though once I get a frame pack most of that is planned to go there, like the tent poles and the bike lock. Hopefully I can get everything out of the backpack except the laptop and medicine + other "important to keep on you" -things.

I am unsure where the waterbottles will go to once I get the frame pack. Probably one on top of the top bar as I have a strap on mount. The other possibly strapped on to the sleeping bag in the back or a fork bag in the front, will need to see. If all else fails, there is the backpack.

I forgot to weight things, will need to do that for the next test ride. Sanna rolled perfectly, didn't even notice the extra weight that much. Probably the long uphill sections will be the places it will become apparent.

@jaywink are you deliberately avoiding a rear rack? You could fit everything you have in your backpack into that.

@[email protected] Excellent question! And to be honest, I have very little reasons. Last year I bought the seat post pack because I thought it was a good idea and my mountain bike didn't have mounts for racks and anyway I didn't want an "ugly looking rack" on my bike. Also I wasn't really planning going bikepacking with a tent and stuff.

Then I bought my gravel and started slowly planning a trip, which then turned into "hey camping could be a fun thing to do", thus more gear. Since I already had a seat post pack it made sense to plan around that, to avoid buying everything from scratch.

However I've started thinking this is turning out into a bad idea after all, I'm noticing the backpack with some weight in it is making my shoulder muscles ache, which may be a bad idea when riding long distances every day. So I had a look and apparently Ortlieb has some nice stuff, a lightweight rack which can be attached and detached easily + a rack pack that can also be used as a backpack. This would allow me to leave my backpack completely at home while ensuring I can keep the most important gear on me for quick shop trips etc.

This trip is ending up really expensive though 😅 But at least all this gear should last a long time.

@jaywink You will have to go on many trips and then it's "cheap". 😂
Can you send a link to that easy attach/detach rack you mentioned?
I might get one. I don't like having a rack on my bike every day, but sometimes it would be very useful.

@[email protected] I bought this one: https://www.ortlieb.com/en_us/quick-rack+F78104 . Easy to assemble, did it outside of the varuste.net, and then it clips on/off really nicely. Unsure how long the front clip will last in usage, but it's Ortlieb, so I suspect it's not going to immediately break apart. It seems pretty rigid.

There is a lighter version https://www.ortlieb.com/en_us/quick-rack-light+F78105 but I wanted the extra bars to strap my tent and sleeping bag onto.

Quick-Rack

From road, gravel or mountain bike to commuter bike in only 15 seconds – with the innovative Quick-Rack, you transform your sporty bike into an all-rounder for everyday use.

@[email protected] I think I'm falling in love with Ortlieb, looking at how well they make spare parts available <3 - https://www.ortlieb.com/en_us/products/spare-parts

For example the Quick Rack front attachment can be bought separately, just happened to notice. I was pleasantly surprised the QL 2.1 locks can also be bought, which is nice since I bought another smaller Ortlieb rack bag second hand, but the locks have snapped, which even the seller didn't realize. We agreed on a discount and I'll get the locks replaced, avoiding a bag being thrown into the trash.

Spare Parts | ORTLIEB

If after the expiry of our guarantee period of 5 years something breaks, there are, of course, all spare parts for re-buying. We also offer this service for bags that have been used for decades.

@[email protected] "You will have to go on many trips and then it's "cheap". 😂 " ... Indeed! :D Hoping to make this a new hobby, then the money should be worth it \o/
@jaywink Great setup, I dig the Mozilla and EFF decals! My solution to the bottle XOR frame bag issue is an Ortlieb water bag inside the frame bag. Takes some getting used to drinking from a tube but the flexibility is worth it.
@[email protected] Thanks! Year will think about that. I think I'm ending up with getting a rear rack + bag(s) instead of a frame pack, which means I can fit 2-3 bottles in the center.
