Season 6 and 7 of #StarTrekDS9 took pains to turn #GulDukat into a monster. Makes you wonder why they ever bothered making him into a complicated character, thriving in an authoritarian society up until then. Maybe the audience was no longer interested in characters with shades of grey?
Hrm... they pretty much did the same thing to Kai Winn in Season 7.

Yeah, the Dukat character took a turn for the worst. But some other characters like Damar and Garak, the writers did a great job with keeping the nuance.

I think in season 5 we found out that #GulDukat lost his whole family when he took #Ziyal back to Cardassia. His wife took the children, and his family disowned him, and I thought, "Aw...."
With this episode it's like, "Oh! Ok, now I get it."
