So there I was happily minding my own retired business and it was today o'clock that I read that a new form of proto-life has been discovered and published this year.

It will be very interesting to see the parsing of viroids, obelisks, prions, and other not-quite-viruses in the coming years. ...and how this relates to DNA plasmids.

@RobynNuthall why is this not utterly huge news??? even the wikpedia page is tiny!

then there's the young boy interpretation... obelisks in human stools? yes, we've all had that experience from time to time...

@pavsmith LOL! Well completely new forms of life are interesting to me! 😐😊...there is a debate about what makes something a living thing, but these replicate like cells and probably commandeer other cells' machinery to grow in number. These might also be a new form of disease causing thing, or might be a beneficial co-rider in humans. This could be big. 🙂
PS it's a stub on Wikipedia because it's a very new and very novel discovery...
Did I convince you? 🧐😏
@RobynNuthall brain is still doing cartwheels. i know that things are getting discovered all of the time, but things like this, kinda loitering about in our digestive tract - which we've studied at length, right? is simply head shakingly amazing. this certainly deserves some additional reading. i wonder if these are what consume all of the chillies in my diet??? anyway, we all know the source of them...
@pavsmith Oh def they eat chillies, yes yes.... chilli eating diet skewing alien gut weaponry!

@RobynNuthall however, in a strangely related thread, was chatting away on The Other Platform (tm) and in a completely separate mental thread about the basic evolution of life:

"oh. agreed. there has to be some other form of life out there. the experience here on earth suggests that the chemicals, etc. that led to us might well be self organising. of course it's unlikely to evolve exactly the same as it has here."

subsequently thought "well, it could take on any form", but then realised that any advanced lifeform, anywhere in the universe, will evolve into someone that The Kirk can have sex with.

@pavsmith Of course all other lifeforms must converge in this way, but it seems fraught with deadly possibilities....at least according to Paul Ruditis etc al.
