Our most dangerous wildlife is back in numbers: #ticks.

Just found one on my leg. Probably picked up on yesterday's walk in the woods. It's a tiny nymph and while I spotted two others these are easy to miss.

The hazard is in the disease they carry. In our region (northern Europe, Denmark) primarily Lyme disease, transferred via bites.

Anyway. #PSA: check for ticks and take them off properly. For a week after check for the telltale Lyme rash (an expanding red circle ANYWHERE on your body).

Oh ffs. Just found another one..

And attached a photo (own work, some years ago) of what a #Lyme / #Borrelia infection looks like. Days to weeks after an infection (#tick bite) this circle can appear anywhere on the body (thus not only where the tickhole was). It will fade out in a day or two but that means the infection is in your body: go to your doctor and get antibiotics!

Someone mentioned #TBE as well. This is now endemic in many european regions. And there's a vaccin! Worth looking into.

@Pepijn Do you have a vaccination for TBE, out of interest?
@hugh Nope, as in our area TBE is not endemic. However it is increasing and I decided to get on it (it's multiple shots, with regular boosters) this year as I spend a lot of time doing stuff in woodland.

@Pepijn loathe ticks, they adore me though.

I've had Lyme too, that sucked.

Good PSA

@ruari @Pepijn everyone who goes on a walk in the woods with me usually brings at least one of them back, but somehow they never like me 🥴 I think I've gotten one or two in my whole life…?

@daniel_bohrer envious of that! They're nasty and seem to hide under every blade of grass

@Pepijn

@Pepijn I hate ticks. Hope you are fine

@ruari Am fine. Just want to eradicate all ticks and their bacteria / virus friends*.

*yeah yeah, everything has an ecosystem value etc etc. That said, Ticks seem to be the Segway-running-on-Windows-Vista-while-the-droid-is-wearing-Google-Glass-connected-to-an-Amazon-Fire-phone of the animal world.

@Pepijn I am all on yourside and against ticks!

@Pepijn I spend time outdoors and walk our dogs daily and have pulled 11 ticks off me so far this spring and 3 off the dogs. This is more than any other year. Four bites on me had severe reactions. So far, I haven’t tested positive for Lymes. I won’t stop spending time outdoors, but am using a spray around my shoes and ankles and check myself more closely now.
