Didn't sleep. Still trying to wrap my brain around it. Feels unprecedented. Feels like the most anti-democratic centralization of power by a Canadian premier ever. The moves of a tyrant with an aim towards an anti-Canadian Separatism we never signed up for

The Alberta government's Bill 20 also proposes allowing party affiliations to be listed on municipal election ballots.

Are their any legal moves for #YYC & #YEG on this? Is there truly no check against this stepped up radio shockjock's tyrannic march? Do we all just have to watch it happen in slow motion? #abpoli #yyc #cdnpoli #Fascism https://globalnews.ca/news/10450717/alberta-municipal-politics-elections-bill/
Bill would give Alberta power to fire municipal councillors, nix bylaws, allow political parties

The bill would give the province the right to fire councillors, overturn bylaws, postpone elections and allow political parties to run on municipal ballots in Edmonton and Calgary.

@TheGentYYC not really, afaik. Municipalities are entirely considered in the domain of the provinces, and technically don't even really need to exist at all. In so far as they do, they are considered nothing more than a limited delegation of provincial power.

Honestly that's rapidly becoming one of the biggest failings of the 1982 Constitution.

@TheGentYYC Whatever moves #daniellezebub makes ... can they be undone with a new government? I recognize the damage in the meantime ... just wondering.
@snowdolphin it depends how far she goes and she's frothing at the mouth to go as far as she can

@TheGentYYC

Albertans elected the government they deserve.

Some of them did, yep - now the rest of us have to live with the poor decisions of our neighbours. Still, there are many thoughtful, kind-hearted people, even in rural Alberta, who will stand up for justice & democracy.

The thing that gets me is that this particular change isn't "conservative" at all - the former legislation was working just fine & had been for decades - they "solved" a non-problem that literally no one was talking about! I hope it wakes people up.

@gardenvarietylinguist @Gumberculese @TheGentYYC it’s very conservative by todays standards. All the right wing seems to want to be kings or dictators now.
@Auli @Gumberculese @TheGentYYC
Yeah I agree - it's really just authoritarian, & yes modern conservatism has become authoritarian... But I have a hard time believing all conservative voters in Alberta support authoritarianism. I feel the ground shifting here in rural Alberta - but I've been wrong before, lol.

@gardenvarietylinguist @Auli @TheGentYYC @Gumberculese

This is a path started by Kenney, but accelerated under Smith. When the shit hits the fan and people start to push back, we’ll begin to see the rationale for Alberta Police force legislation that they ‘wouldn’t ever actually use’.

@gardenvarietylinguist @ScribblersEmporium @Auli @TheGentYYC @Gumberculese @jonburr

Umm, all this …

<waves generally at the accelerating autocratic shitstorm that is Alberta under the Kenney/Smith/UCP/O&G/corporatist government>

@TheGentYYC Mobilize, mobilize, mobilize and RESIST.
@TheGentYYC Look call them up right now to get them to fix that local issue that’s bugging you. Talk to them about the recent zoning application. Be proactive and let them have input on local matters now. After a few days they’ll run away. Muni politicians are way more involved in citizen interaction than the provincials.
