As we looked through the photos albums of our great-uncle, it was clear he travelled extensivily throughout Aotearoa. We wondered where he got the money for this as he worked for the Post Office. We will never really know, but it was fun to speculate. He visited Ahuriri/Napier in June 1931, a few months after the devastating earthquake. In the photo below, you can see the opera house in the foreground looking very damaged by the earthquake.

@paulhellyer that's the Napier Municipal Theatre. The Opera House ( although back then it was known as the Hastings Municipal Theatre) is in Hastings. Also damaged in the earthquake but not to the extent of the dear old Napier Muni.
@Aileen Ah, that’s so interesting! The photo in the album is labeled “The Opera House in the Foreground”, which just goes to show you always need to double check these things.
@paulhellyer ..unless it was an opera house before the earthquake...that I don't know.
@paulhellyer This is a great photo. I wonder where the money came from.
@paulhellyer i wonder if back then (like now) the post office had holiday houses for people to get cheaper accommodation at.
@paulhellyer Depending on what work he did at the Post Office, it could well have been travel for work purposes.
