Microsoft say they accidentally installed Copilot on Windows Server via Edge update process, say it has “no spy function” https://borncity.com/win/2024/04/18/windows-edge-123-0-2420-65-update-from-march-2024-unintentionally-brings-co-pilot-app-no-spy-function/
Windows: Edge 123.0.2420.65 update from March 2024 unintentionally brings co-pilot app; no "spy function"

[German]An "accidental" update to the Microsoft Edge browser at the end of March 2024 led to parts of the Copilot app being installed on Windows 10/11 and Server. Microsoft states that this was not intentional and emphasizes that this app "does not perform any spying functions" - a remarkable statement. They want to correct this...

Microsoft accidentally released one of the most powerful open source large language models to date without safety vetting, deleted it, and is now declining to comment after people keep reuploading it.

Microsoft Deleted Its LLM Because It Didn’t Get a Safety Test, But Now It’s Everywhere

Microsoft deleted its WizardLM 2 LLM because it didn’t go through “toxicity testing,” but it’s already all over the internet.

@GossiTheDog you would have thought they’d have learned something after that whole twiiter Tay escapade
@GossiTheDog and they also have that nice bridge up for sale.
@GossiTheDog so are they saying normal installs do have a spy function
@GossiTheDog Microsoft investigated their self and found no wrong doing...

@catsalad @GossiTheDog

Their hiring process filters for self satisfaction if not outright narcissism so I guess that scales?

@GossiTheDog Copilot told Microsoft that there is no spyware installed on your server
@GossiTheDog Edge on a server is a terrible idea.
Another reason to aim for core instances or Linux if possible/ compatible with the workload.

@GossiTheDog The ongoing clown show. How did they get something released by accident? Where I work if it isn't on the release RFC it doesn't go in, no exceptions! All code is tested (unit, UA and if required a full pay cycle in test) then reviewed and the client signs off before we start. During the pre-release walkthrough we (DEV, SUPPORT and CLIENT) review EVERY change and all agree that is all for a release.

I also wouldn't believe them about 'no spy function'.

@GossiTheDog so adding a totally unrelated installer to edge updater is something that can be done accidentally?
@GossiTheDog Accidentally my ***. It's only an accident they got caught.
@GossiTheDog My "Copilot software we installed on your Windows Server does not perform any spying functions" T-shirt has people asking a lot of questions already answered by my shirt.
@GossiTheDog It has no SkyNet function?
@GossiTheDog And how could you disbelieve the little chumps?
@GossiTheDog @mhoye Things seem to be going well over there. 👍
