This chapter reminded me of some of the kids I grew up with who would act out in school a lot. My mom works in a school and talks about kids doing this stuff a lot too. Teachers and other adults wouldn't understand why they would do stupid things to get in trouble. Now I see that it was a way for them to have some semblance of control over the situation. If they're going to be criminalized anyway, why not make a point of it and save their dignity. I want to explain this chapter to my mom. #so345
@eh2003 I had a similar experience as my dad was asking me what I was reading over the weekend and I told him "Dummy Smart" and he asked what that meant, and as I was explaining their grasping for control when they typically have none, I got to see him understand why people would do those "stupid things" and it made me think how easy it is to understand, so why can't someone explain this concept to the law enforcement who work directly with the kids who make those choices? #so345
@eh2003 This really puts why they act the way they do into perspective. I think that it is what they know how to do, and it is their way of engaging and standing up to the system.
