Wholesome blogs minus the yucky bits of the modern web

@xenodium This is very cool. I like the name generator on the front page, its fun.
@xenodium Nice to see some competition to bearblog.
@xenodium so excited to see this no-bloat concept get more and more attention lately. https://blot.im is another attempt at such blogs. Good luck with your project!!
Blot

Turns a folder into a website

@andreiv Thank you! blot looks great too!
@xenodium can I please have an invite code?
@xenodium @ovan maybe something for @atog since he has been using his other platform for over a week now 😅
@xenodium Interesting, but how are you planning to monetize this to cover the costs involved in hosting, dev time etc?
Frequently asked questions

@xenodium Should have read the FAQ before asking, sorry 😅
@CodingThunder No worries! There's plenty more to answer there. Working on it.

@xenodium

@CodingThunder Fucking A. Appreciate the straightforward transparency. More services like this please.

@xenodium I'm curious to try it. Always wanted to get into blogging, but I don't like the offerings I've seen out there. I don't have a lot of followers (if any) but I do like to write stuff, and social media doesn't seem suited for long-form posts.
@CerebralHawks Sure. DMd you an invite code.
@xenodium I have a bug report: your password checker doesn’t accept Safari password strings defaults because they have dashes. I changed to other punctuation and it went through.
@avirr Thank you for reporting! I've just fixed this.
@xenodium I would love to try this out. I miss blogging but every workflow I've tried is too much overhead.
@dma Sure! DMd you an invite code to claim a blog handle. Hope it brings you back to blogging!
@xenodium Me parece súper interesante, gracias por hacer algo así. Voy a hacerme el blog.
@akirasanz Magnífico! Enviame un DM/email para un invite code.
@xenodium Feedback right off the bat, please get rid of whatever that is at the top of pages. All my screen reader sees is underscore underscore underscore slash slash slash slash, slash, slash slash slash underscore slash.
@seedy @xenodium That’s the issue with every text only service ever: sighted people demand graphics, so they just use ascii art. Far better for accessibility to just support image files and require alt text. This is also a huge issue in gem capsules.

@fastfinge @seedy Thanks for this! I hadn't considered it. I've now hidden the ASCII art banner from screen reader via aria-hidden="true" for the time being. It should at least get rid of the noise, I hope. Lemme know if otherwise.

I also intend to support image banners. It's already in the backlog.

@xenodium @seedy No worries, thanks for responding! I also love things that are text only. But as I gain more real world experience with them, I’m coming to find that limiting people’s format of expression is actually anti-accessibility. Far better to support them in making the format they really want to use accessible. Otherwise they just use hacks like ascii art, or linking to another site, that generally have no accessibility support at all.
@xenodium @seedy Another thing you might consider when you support image banners: provide a pretty default, and try to normalize not changing it. As a blind person, my content is always at a disadvantage because it doesn’t have a lovely logo and a beautiful banner. It doesn’t matter how good my content is: no profile pic? I’m blocked as a spammer. No thumbnail? Nobody clicks! I would happily pay for a service that I could use to just generate generically unique versions of this type of imagery.

@fastfinge @seedy The challenge in normalizing the default banner image/ascii art is that the customization loses its relevance. This may be ok, but we may as well consider removing it altogether.

With respect to generating generically unique imagery, one option that comes to mind is automatically generating the ASCII art per blog handle/name. The LMNO ASCII art was generated by feeding those same letters to a tool anyway.

@xenodium @seedy Do you know of tools that can do this and let me specify size in pixels? I can think of dozens of places to use it. My personal instance needs a logo. Every website I make wants a favicon. Every place I comment wants an avatar. Every chat protocol but IRC wants one, too. If I write a fanfic for fun a cover image is a requirement. On the modern internet, every single thing you want to do requires at least one image asset, and if you fail to provide it or use the default, bad faith is assumed in most cases. Sorry for the off topic rant!
@xenodium This looks fantastic! I just sent an email for an invite.
@CandidApples glad you like it! Sent you an invite.
@xenodium @ctietze Wie cool ist das denn!!! Sieht nach einem Ding aus, nachdem ich lange gesucht habe. Das werde ich später mal ausprobieren. 😍
@phranck @ctietze Nice to hear it! You can try without signing in, though lemme know if you’d like an invite if you’re keen to register a blog handle.

@xenodium @ctietze Btw: What does "lmno" stand for in this context?

[1] Leave My Name Out
[2] Leave My Name Off
[3] Laughing My Nuts Off
[4] Something else

🤔

@phranck @xenodium I read it as "lemmino", "let me know" :)
@ctietze @phranck hmmm these are all great suggestions! thank you both!
@ctietze @phranck ps. I have no affiliation with https://porkbun.com, but they are offering many .lol domains for $1.52 on the first year, so here I am with a handful of .lol domains, most of which I'll release after the first year.
porkbun.com | An oddly satisfying experience.

Porkbun is an amazingly awesome ICANN accredited domain name registrar based out of the Pacific Northwest. We're different, we're easy, and we're affordable. Use us, you won't be sorry. If you don't use us we'll be sad, but we'll still love you.

porkbun.com
@ctietze @phranck also, I may or may not have registered old.schule

@phranck @ctietze https://lmno.lol/lmno/frequently-asked-questions#why-name-it-lmno.lol%3F but frankly, it's hard to get great domains that aren't crazy expensive! I have others registered. I intend to enable multiple entry points so folks can pick whichever flavour they prefer.

ps. If you have a great domain you're willing to part with, I'm listening ;)

Frequently asked questions

@xenodium @ctietze I just have registered my account and have written nothing, atm.

BUT: I bet I will like this service. Not only because it offers plain Markdown, but also because of its simplicity. And I think you should add a monetisation option when the time comes. Either on a donation basis or some kind of subscription. It doesn't have to be expensive, but it gives you the opportunity to at least cover the costs.

@phranck @ctietze glad to hear ya reckon you’ll like it.

Agree. Effort should be self sustainable in order to remain truth to its goal. For now, I need early feedback for those ok to find the rough edges.

@xenodium @ctietze As I mentioned, without using it actually by myself, I already have one question:

Having a look at your account https://lmno.lol/alvaro I ask myself: Is/will be there a way of grouping by month/year/something else (in the future)?

@alvaro

This is my blog

@phranck @ctietze I had missed this… I hadn’t thought about it, will add to feature requests.

@xenodium @ctietze Ooh... I'm just reading this now: „This blog is powered by a single markdown file, including all its posts.“

Hm… I thought it would make one blog post per Markdown file. 🤔

@phranck @ctietze Multi-file is on the backlog.

Give single-file a try. I can say there’s something fairly refreshing and simple about powering a blog from a single file.

With a great editor, it’s a breeze to navigate but also more portable (btw https://lmno.lol/alvaro is roughly 10 years worth of posts).

@alvaro

This is my blog

@xenodium @ctietze Custom Domain would be great, too. I would pay for it.

@xenodium
Syntax highlighting (for different languages eg. ```swift) would be great. 😊

https://lmno.lol/phranck/hello-again

Hello again!

@phranck yup. Looking to experiment with server-side syntax highlighting.

I’m trying to keep generated blog JavaScript-free on clients (reduces bloat and enables reading from anywhere, even terminal).
