Vietnam’s micro-apartments are a godsend for the poor – and a deadly risk

An apartment block fire that killed 56 people last year has highlighted the dangers of Vietnam’s tiny urban dwellings.

@Norobiik This is the alternative to the "no cheap housing" problem everyone is complaining about in every Western city.

They need better electrical safety. Chinese scooters are known for catching fire while charging, so maybe there needs to be a charging post away from the building.

Water mist can put out a fire with a small amount of water that could be stored in a tank. Why is there not a self contained water mist automatic extinguisher?

@Norobiik I'm thinking of something that looks like a propane tank with a nozzle on top. The tank has water and some gas for pressurization, with a pipe and pickup at the bottom of the tank. There is a smoke detector, possibly an optical flame detector, and a release valve. If it detects fire it starts beeping, and if nobody hits the cancel button, it sprays water mist.

These could also be used at construction sites like Notre Dame where risky work is being done.

@mike805 The irony & tragedy is that your idea can be cheaply implemented in Vietnam using local resources and technology. But until some fire disaster like the great Chicago fire in 1871 happens, there won't be radical change.
