I don’t know that “liberals”, especially American ones, ever believed that public health is a collective effort. Certainly the neo-liberals don’t and never have. They believe it’s an outcome of markets in which individual actors pursue self-interest.

@scottmatter "Liberals" in the US means center-left (the mainstream Democrats.) I know it's confusing, as in the rest of the world, it usually means "right-wing" (another thing where the US just can't align with the rest of the world)

Yes, I’m familiar. And tbh, the Canadian Liberals have been fairly close to US Democrat positions, while Liberals in Australia are right-wing and drifting further

Meanwhile, Labour in the UK (since Blair?) and Australia (since Hawke / Keating?) - ostensibly more left-wing have been far more neoliberal than anything like collectivist or socialist.
