The #MexicanGovernment is building a railway expansion project straight through a crucial #wildlife corridor for imperiled #jaguars, #ocelots and #BlackBears without doing any environmental impact studies.

Running from #Guaymas on the #GulfOfCalifornia to #Nogales on the U.S.-Mexico border, the railway project will wreak havoc on #habitat essential for ocelots in their northern breeding grounds.

And it's a major threat to #animals who depend on transboundary #migration, like jaguars. These majestic big cats once roamed in the #UnitedStates, but by the 1960s, ruthless #killing had eradicated them north of the U.S.-Mexico border. A few #jaguars have recently crossed the border to explore and hunt, and #biologists hope more will migrate from #Mexico to suitable habitat in #Arizona and #NewMexico, helping the #species make a comeback. But to do that, they need north-south pathways

This project's planned route will pass through the town of #Ímuris, harming hundreds of households and encroaching upon the magnificent #RanchoElAribabi, a designated Mexican #reserve. The railway has sparked intense local opposition due to its environmental impact β€” but the government isn't giving residents the option to not sell their land to make way for it.
