— She should try actually talking and listening to trans kids.

@Susan_Larson_TN Acknowledging the 2% and then calling the ideas "mythical" is kinda problematic as well, though. The whole method of them pushing that propaganda so hard is to take a narrow subset and making it seem larger than it is, calling the foundations for their crap "lies" when we know there are misused facts at the center only gives them more power to assert their bad claims. We can hit them harder without ignoring real people.

@Susan_Larson_TN I actually met someone who detransitioned once. This was several years ago, I was getting admitted at the same time as them. They were pushed pretty hard to start transitioning before they really were sure of who they were, and they ended up in more misery than they started.

This is one such story that gets used for pushing against transitioning, or for gating, but we should be using it ourselves to push for better education of professionals, making sure they're actually ready.

@khionu @Susan_Larson_TN

People who detransition exist.

People who *willingly* detransition exist.

However, detransitioning by choice was not the only possibility in the statement about study results.

My first thought was, How much of the 2% had passed away?

How many were forced to detransition because support faded?

One person who detransitioned (who the transmisic majority are eager to acknowledge) is not a good reason to minimize calls to give people medical support.

@shadowsminder @Susan_Larson_TN Had me up until the last bit. Were you inferring I was supporting such a reduction?

@Susan_Larson_TN
It's important to note that the majority of people who detransition end up restarting their transition at a later time. Most detransitioned, not because they were mistaken about their identity, but because of external factors such as family pressure or cost. That 98% figure is almost certainly low.

The pertinent section of the reference link is about halfway down the page.

There are so many hurdles in the WPATH guidelines that it's rare for anyone to get through the process who isn't trans.

Honest Answers for Honest Concerns

Stained Glass Woman

@violet I know this. I #detransitioned for a #decade in the 90's.

What I didn't do, was go out and lobby against the only treatment that provides actual relief to trans people.

I support true detransitioners, what I don't support is detransitioners weaponized by religion and other transphobic extremists and the tropes they use in an attempt to harm our community.

The hypocrisy involved is stunning once you consider ‘accepted’ gender affirming interventions… take breast augmentation as an example (US 2021 stats):

584,000 surgeries performed
25+% were maintenance (148,000 removed and replaced)
12% were straight removals 71,000, suggesting a very high regret rate
