A #Russian volunteer who helped #Ukrainians died in a pre-trial detention centre. According to his wife, he was tortured by security forces. His son wrote about possible suicide

Volunteer from #Belgorod #Alexander_Demidenko, who, since 2022, has been helping #Ukrainians return home from #Russia, died in a pre-trial detention centre

“I think my father committed suicide, since for such an active and freedom-loving person, the thought of a possible future imprisonment was unbearable.

He had already been psychologically killed for six months in a pre-trial detention centre without visits from his family or even books,” said #Demidenko’s son.

Since March 2022, #Demidenko has been helping #Ukrainian refugees by providing them with overnight accommodation and accompanying them to the border with Ukraine. In October 2023, he disappeared while accompanying an elderly woman at the #Kolotilovka checkpoint.

Three days later, he was returned home and searched, finding signs of torture on his body. He was arrested on charges of illegal possession of weapons from #World_War_II, after which he was placed in a pre-trial detention centre.
