❓Question for you #HamRadio operators out there:

Up till now, I have only been doing analog FM. I would like to learn more about digital modes. What digital mode is your favorite to use and why?

📻

@rhett FT8, mostly because it's popular and relatively easy to make contacts, especially for POTA.
@rhett where I am living anolig FM is the only thing on vhf/uhf besides #aprs. Mostly digital operations run around HF. For that #Olivia is my favorite these days. Chatty people with good propagation.
@rhett depends:
- UHF handheld - DMR
- Shortwave - FT8
- Sat - packet radio in FM or SSB
@rhett my fav digi mode app is FLdigi. Many modes to play with. I really like using FeldHell mode. Its. Robust and uses little average power. Feldhell is not truly digital, rather is a vertical analog scan of letters. Its all fun especially on HF.

@rhett FT8 gets a bad rap from some quarters but I enjoy it. I like seeing the map of where my signals are being received, it gives a good sense of propagation, and it's a handy test for whatever equipment I've put together at the time.

I also really like JS8Call, which caters for actual communication over text. It's slow, but great fun.

I find both really work well with my low power (<20W) station and DIY antenna stuff.

@rhett #aprs for short messages and information retrieval (not so much into positioning). #packetradio or #ARDOP for #winlink emails (no windows, no #vara). #js8call for some asynchronous message and data exchange (not much experience yet). #M17project looks interesting. It is #foss enabling us to execute our #hamradio right to experiment (not like all that closed proprietary stuff: #DMRradio, #c4fm / #ysf and #dstar).
@rhett I’m a newly minted tech, and I’m exploring DMR. *However* the one bit of learning I will share is to look what is active in your area. That goes for all digital modes - digital repeaters, APRS digipeaters, etc. It’s no fun investing a lot of time and not having anyone to talk to. This goes for clubs too - do a bit of club shopping to find out what people are into. #hamradio

@rhett Binary... (ie CW) ;-)

Plus APRS...

@rhett team APRS here. SSTV is a lot of fun too. Send memes to your buddies over ham radio! When I was at BYUI we used the campus repeater to have a memes net every other week.
@rhett @kc7uqd Allstar, because it's basically the equivalent of analog FM on both ends. Second would be DMR only because it's so cheap to buy compatible rigs.
@rhett I've got a lot of ham friends who are frequently on FT-8, have had success getting the most out of QRP rigs in the past with it personally
@rhett Hellschreiber - because is cool :) and ft8 because of efficiency. Pic shows hel in use.
