Because the movies have become so famous for this stylistic device, you might think that #SergioLeone came up with the extreme close-ups of the duelist’s eyes, but hey, #SamuelFuller’s hard-boiled 1957 western #FortyGuns has them too. The cut from extreme close-up to long shot was and is pretty daring, but that is Fuller’s entire body of work. This particular scene is one of my favorites of all western scenes.
