I think I would like to get into carving. My sensory cravings think it would be. Slow key delightful tactile hobby.

I have basic ceramics carving tools, and was wondering if anyone had recommendations of cheap materials which might be enjoyably tactile to carve?

Bonus points if like, a natural and sustainable thing!

@moss soap? I carved soap a little as a kid. It was easy, seems like it could be inexpensive or sustainable (tho maybe not both)

PLASTER OF PARIS is a good start.

it’s cheap, you can get it at the hardware store and you can use things like take out containers to create your own blocks. it's what they use in art schools to teach the principles of sculpting.

plaster of paris can be softened with water or hardened with sand or talcum powder. you can add acrylic dyes and paints to have different colors. it’s super versatile.

just wear a respirator and protective glasses when mixing.

happy carving.
