The IRS is sending out more than 125,000 notices to individuals who made $400,000 or more and failed to file returns between 2017 and 2021.

It's estimated that the richest Americans are dodging $150 billion worth of taxes every year.

This is why IRS funding is a good thing.

@rbreich I support it, I just wish that money wasn’t being used for endless war and funding genocide. I really hope the US changes in my lifetime but I’m not holding my breath.
@rbreich So many issues could essentially be solved with $150 billion a year. Homelessness could be a thing of that past with that type of funding.

@rbreich they sure didn't waste any time notifying me repeatedly of my outstanding balance while I was paying off around $5K in federal taxes last year.

It seems to me that they pursue the "average Joe" a hell of a lot more fervently than millionaires who haven't even filed returns for years. What the hell is up with that, may I ask? I'm not anti-tax but this makes it very, very tempting for said Joe to just give the IRS the finger and avoid, avoid, avoid.

@ianto_jones @rbreich Easy, athe rich file complicated tax returns that nearly require a degree to figure out where the lies are, whereas working class people like us file simple returns and there isn't anything complicated like trusts or corporations to hide things in.
@taur10 @rbreich @ianto_jones so essentially they just don't want to do their jobs and instead feed on the lower-to-middle class. Sounds about right, I suppose.
@ianto_jones @rbreich Somewhat, they'd get cut more if'nt they didn't do anything, and they don't really have the budget or staff to go after the big violators, so they take what they can handle. It definitely sucks, and this shows what happens when you properly fund them , which is nice to see since the working class gets screwed so often, should see Missouri and it's personal property tax BS.
@rbreich I'm still wating for the refund of my overpayment from 2020.
@rbreich Never mind the individuals, it's the corporates that are screwing everyone. I agree though funding IRS and in the UK HMRC is positive but I wish they would focus on the corporates and stop chasing the easier targets of individuals.
McConnell bill prevents IRS ‘harassment’ of political groups

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and other Republican senators announced their legislation Tuesday to stop the Internal Revenue Service from not granting nonprofit, tax-exempt status to political groups. “No president of either party should use the power of the federal government to punish his ideological opponents,” McConnell said.
