@jeffowski American education system ....

@jeffowski

We did the same calculation for commercial pilots. We used no pay, but tip $25/pax to the cockpit crew, $15-captain, $10-copilot for what was essentially a cross country bus ride. It was 3 times what we were actually paid...which wasn't bad in itself.

Teacher's pay can be low. Some at the top end of the scale are making decent money. But their work is invaluable in perpetuating ourselves as humane, intelligent animals. Much more important than slogging a family to Disney World.

@jeffowski Reminds me of the guy who tried to negotiate with the quartet for his wedding.
"If you think we're pricey," the band leader said, "I'll make you a deal. Call the local union and get a quote for four plumbers to work five hours on a Saturday night. We'll take that amount instead."

@GregStolze @jeffowski A 5-piece band I was in played 2 1/2 hours of music. We had people dancing out the door, down the stairs, and saw them dancing out in the parking lot through a window. We earned $25. The club owner said, "We only pay you for the number of people in the bar when you start."

I absolutely despise music. Not making music. The business of music. It's rip-offs and cocaine all the way down.

@steter @jeffowski This is the year my opinion of creativity has shifted from "People LOVE art and artists!" to "As a rule, people hate art and despise creatives -- they just make a small number of exceptions."
@jeffowski also, babysitters are often also incredibly underpaid. So both professions should be earning a lot more!
@jeffowski in the US there are only 25 kids per class? In the school my kid attends most classes (per level) have 30-32 kids and one might only have 28.
