Lighthouses of the United Kingdom. I rather like how this turned out. And it didn't take 42 hours. ๐Ÿ˜…

#rayshader adventures, an #rstats tale

@terence
Poster material! ๐Ÿ˜
@dominicstucki @terence can I have a print but of a different region? ๐Ÿ˜
@salakala @dominicstucki Sure, which region would you like to see?
@terence @dominicstucki EE coastline, in the Baltic sea, please.
@salakala Will be a nice challenge. Let me see what I can do
@terence Nice! What is the number, though? and where did you get the data from?
@herobrine7gamer Thanks! I got the data from OpenStreetMap, and it shows 285 lighthouses.
@terence This is beautiful! Well done ๐Ÿ˜„

@terence That's gorgeous!

Also, hello fellow Terence! Shall we start a club?

@terence I wanted to visit that circled one (Cape Wrath), last year, but missed the only ferry on that day. :(
@terence Pretty! wth is that one somewhere near Worcester?
@terence Ah, in a separate thread @Helenmackin identified it as Hanbury Wharf lighthouse on the Canal: https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2843482

@terence Since all lighthouses on the island of Ireland are operated by the same cross-border authority (the Commissioners of Irish Lights) this feels a bit territorial and contrived. It would be natural to show all of the lighthouses of the three General Lighthouse Authorities instead of going by national borders.
@theohonohan @terence
I was wondering why Ireland looked smaller than usual.
@theohonohan Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I wasn't aware of this and agree it makes more sense. I'm considering either doing Ireland or the British Isles, if I can merge the data properly.

@terence huh, thanks to this I just learned there is a tiny lighthouse very near my childhood town. Where one of my family lived and I spent a lot of time as a kid in fact. Was not aware of it at all. Very cool.

@terence wonderful effect! great idea.

what is the circle in the middle?

@acm_redfox That's my little watermark. ๐Ÿ˜…
@terence ๐Ÿคฃ I forgot to use my jeweler's loop! ๐Ÿ˜‚

@terence nice, although there should be one at Dunnet ahead, unless the co-ordinates from your source data are a bit off and itโ€™s one of the dots in the Pentland firth.

Again. Nice.

@terence there's inland lighthouses?! On rivers I presume?
@terence This is 15 and a half flavours of gorgeous.
@terence loling at only Northern Ireland being included.
@terence So beautiful! It's like Christmas decoration.
A pity Ireland is almost all sunk, though. They should have built more lighthouses, I guess.
@rodrigoplp Thanks! There are lighthouses in Ireland. I should have included themโ€”an oversight on my part.
@terence The island of Ireland seems to be oddly shaped.
(Might want to remove the UK limit.)
@terence Beautiful dataviz.
@terence Cool. Would be nice to view this as an interactive map, where hovering on each bright spot could open up a box containing details (place name and other stats), slideshow of photos, etc.
@terence fractals are coolest when presented all glowy like this. ๐Ÿฅฐ
@terence @t_dtm youโ€™ll love this!!
@terence could you do The British Isles (so, include the remainder of the Island of Ireland)
@terence if the workflow is easy to reproduce, I'd love to see the Netherlands. (I suspect continental Europe would be too "zoomed out" to be meaningful.)

@terence Looks REALLY cool! But where's the Isle of Man?

EDIT: Just remembered that technically the Isle of Man is not the UK.

@terence this is very cool and I hate to point it out, but I think your missing Trevose Head in Cornwall? https://www.trinityhouse.co.uk/lighthouses-and-lightvessels/trevose-head

@terence love this ๐Ÿ˜ would you be willing to offer a version of this big enough to print? My partner spent some time working for Trinity House and it'd be a really cool thing to give him!
@terence if you send Christmas cards that would make a lovely image!
@terence Wonderful. Does something like this exist for France ? I would be dark on the east border but nice as well.

@terence wow, that is very awesome!

I'm now intregued as to where the inland lighthouses are.

@terence What's the story of the inland lighthouses? Riparian?
@terence
This is awesome, love the concept of using firefly type effect for the locations!
...but you may do well to use a more up to date map of the UK, the Isle of Man appears to be missing ;)
@Nickiquote This (โฌ†๏ธ ) appeared directly below your post about the โ€˜islandโ€™ of NI: looks like those coasts are dangerous, with no lighthouses to be seenโ€ฆ ;o)
@terence this is amazing but why is there a lighthouse on the Welsh border in the middle of the country
@terence Beautiful visualization! Reminds of the descriptions of sailing along the coast from Arthur Ransome's novel Peter Duck.
@terence do you have a high res version or print I can buy, this is gorgeous
@terence the Portland Bill Lighthouse seems to be missing.
@terence Thatโ€™s very cool. Thanks for sharing it with us.
