If I make a #Lancashire #hotpot, but I choose to make it with #beef rather than #lamb, because whenever I've tried lamb I've always thought that it tasted like #piss, is there some other county that I can use to describe the hotpot? I did try Googling the natural alternative, "#Yorkshire hotpot", but the recipes for that also tend to use lamb.
@leonrobbins I’m a Lancastrian and I’d say Lancashire hotpot can be made with whatever meat is available. I’ve never had it not made with beef. I’m always surprised when I read recipes that say use lamb. My mum always used to make it on Monday to use up the beef left over from Sunday dinner and she covered it with pastry instead of neatly arranged slices of potato.
@quietste Thank you! I made it last night from this recipe –
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/lancashire-hotpot
– which calls for lamb and lamb kidneys 🤢, but I replaced the lamb with beef casserole steak and left out the offal. It was delicious, but I thought it had to use lamb to be Lancashire hotpot – so it's good to hear from you that I can still call it that. Apparently Betty in Coronation Street put lamb necks in hers. I won't be making that recipe!
Lancashire hotpot

This famous lamb stew topped with sliced potatoes should be on the menu at every British pub

@leonrobbins then it’s not Lancashire Hotspot, as someone who once lived in a place that was at one time deemed part of Lancashire, Lamb is bloody gorgeous, Beef ain’t, you may as well just make a Beef Stew..
