Fire ants are REALLY bad this year. They're everywhere, and right along several of our walkways in the yard. I've been using some fire ant powder to kill them but it's not working, one bed will die and another will pop up near it. What do people use to actually kill the queen? #FireAnts #Gardening
@Jennifer There is this powder that comes in a sprinkle can like you would buy spices in but it's bigger and you buy it at the hardware store. If you can find the hill where the ants live and dump the powder into the hill, that should do it. At least that's how I have done it before. Also, there is a really great product called best yet Cedarside and it's cedar suspended in some sort of silicon solution so it sticks when you spray it and I use that on areas Where they tend to go.
@Pawpower yeah the powder is what i have that isn't totally killing them. It's like the queen is just saying FU and moves a foot away and starts over lol. The powder always worked before but not this year!
@Jennifer Oh no! That is not good! It's like they're becoming resistant. And those bites hurt! Yikes.
@Pawpower years ago i was working in the garden and luckily had on mud boots and pants. I looked down and realized I was standing in a fire ant bed and they were swarming up my leg. I started screaming and running through the yard taking off my boots and then pants. Luckily neighbors aren't close so nobody saw me running around the yard in my underwear screaming LOL. I actually don't remember even getting bit. Since then I'm really careful about looking for any mounds!
@Jennifer maybe boric acid? I usually make boric acid traps by mixing it with sugar and water, but you can also sprinkle it on their trails.
@madt67 i don't think that will kill the queen. I use boric acid for native ants but fire ants are super hardy and resistant to being killed!
@Jennifer this happened to us one year and someone told us there was probably a mother nest and to kill it. We found this huge ant bed in our neighbor’s yard and killed it. That took care of the problem.
@Cajunpencil a mother nest??? Ack!!
@Jennifer ikr!sounded like a horror movie to us too.
