I really enjoyed this, mainly because of the family story too. While other fans might be watching just to see monsters fight, there’s always been more than that to this franchise.
I’ve seen several of the older Godzilla franchise offerings, and always felt that the emotional, personal elements were their strength, despite the minimal dialogue. Even the monsters had emotional expression. A good example is the 1970s Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla.
All to say that it was good to see this Apple offering take the opportunity of a streaming series to go in the opposite direction from action emphasis of the recent tentpole movies, to pull in more of the character stories.
In Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, I felt that Mari Yamamoto’s character of Dr. Keiko Miura was the stand out performance. I look forward to seeing more of her in a second season. I’m confident that Yamamoto would continue to shine as a brilliant scientist and woman out of time.
