I will honestly admit that I have never turned on airplane mode on a plane. Some do not include for the entire flight, but only for takeoff and landing and this also applies to #Bluetooth. I usually watch a series on headphones even before takeoff.

You Don’t Need to Use Airplane Mode on Airplanes

@to3k this article is not really right. Airplane mode has one advantage that is your phone won’t try to talk to all the BTS below the plane contesting the network. Normally you have access to maybe 3 antennas. In the sky it’s thousands.

I heard that if everyone would keep their phones on it would harm the mobile network on the ground.

@hey I don’t believe it. Planes fly at an altitude of about 11km above the ground and counting vertically, so from such a distance to connect with one BTS is a challenge, and you are certainly not able to take communication with a thousand antennas as you said.
@to3k yeah except when they’re not. On every flight between FRA and KTW I’m able to pick up good LTE connection while being next to the window. Also this is how planes are offering WiFi. They have a small antenna on their belly pointing towards earth for better signal.
@hey In my opinion, the only argument for turning on the airplane mode is that hundreds of devices on board do not interfere with the signal of aircraft devices, but on the other hand, airplanes are such constructions that have to deal with it, so it is rather only as part of blowing on the cold.
