Apple backs off killing web apps, but the fight continues - Open Web Advocacy

Open Web Advocacy

@owa only a partial win, however:

> All Home Screen web apps will still be powered by WebKit

So you can use whatever browser you want unless you want to compete with the App Store, in which case we want to tie one arm behind your back because we can't take the heat. 😞

@westbrook @owa My understanding is that Apple will still need to provide features parity (hopefully this year). Their communication seems like they are playing the clock.
@westbrook @owa Imagine a future where it becomes common knowledge that adding a website to home screen turns it shit because it then runs on the inferior WebKit engine that doesn’t support all the powerful app features. Apple is in a lose-lose scenario right now.
@simevidas @owa If only the regular people out there understood that all the browser were the same today, then I'd have hope they'd understand why this was happening and not blame it generally on the web.
@westbrook @owa Once other browsers start shipping their own engines, users will start understanding. Users may not know the technical details, but they can understand what it means when a website feature works in Chrome but not in Safari.
@westbrook Our work over the last 4 weeks was just to ensure everyone's existing apps continued to work. Apple is obligated to support third-party browser engines in web apps, and we will make sure that it happens.
@owa iPad iOS is different to iOS? Yeah it's an abandoned ios
@owa Great work! 👏🏼👏🏼
@owa Apple’s press releases sure make it clear what they think about the DMA, but boy, your language is even more one-sided, myopic and self-congratulatory. No matter your stance, and no matter how much Apple likes our money, it’s a complex issue!
@lensco, we had a significant number of volunteers who worked around the clock with very long hours over the last 4 weeks. It’s really important to acknowledge that work. The open letter was really just the surface. Not quite sure what part you think is one sided, if you can go into detail, we might be able to address your concerns.

@owa Your open letter was good – I signed it as well. But maybe it had zero to do with Apple's reversal?
You say Apple wants to destroy web apps, yet they added features for it every year?
You claim they wanted to do this in secret to deceive people, yet that's how they’ve operated for 30 years?
You continue to minimize or neglect the actual security concerns that need to be addressed, and the amount of actual work that this change needs.

It’s good to be critical, but this reads as desperate.

@owa As a workaround, can't PWA on iOS try to launch itself in Chrome/Blink or Firefox/Gecko using custom URL scheme e.g. pwa://example.org, for better Web API support? https://alirezahamid.medium.com/launching-applications-from-the-web-the-power-of-custom-url-schemes-4d9fa3e6cdbe
@owa i thought everyone was saying Apple had to do this and it was EUs fault? So what's changed, other than a corporation as usual maliciously trying to mislead consumers to believe it's regulations are always bad, and in Apples case having an army of cultists defending them incessantly.
