Rabharta - the Party for Workers and Carers, welcome the forthcoming enactment of the Local Government (Mayor of Limerick) Bill.
Although the Bill has been criticised by some as not having gone far enough, we consider the Bill as a marked opportunity for Limerick.

Having a Directly Elected Mayor will increase the visibility of Limerick City and County Council, bring greater democracy, transparency and accountability to local government in Limerick and establish a direct line of communication between Limerick and central government through the formation of the Limerick Mayoral and Government Consultative Forum.

The new mayor will have powers not previously conferred on mayors in Ireland. These powers include executive functions in strategy development, policy development and implementation and co-ordination of large-scale programmes.
The role, therefore, requires a strategic, evidenced-based thinker. One who does not forget that they represent all the people of Limerick and places the voice of the people at the centre of everything they do.
As Limerick is the first region to have a Directly Elected Mayor, the task of developing the template for Ireland and demonstrating success, will fall to whoever is elected. This requires a mayor who is innovative, experienced and forward-thinking.
We are conscious that the people of Limerick are waiting for candidates to announce.
