If someone you follow boosts too much stuff, you can hide just their boosts from your timeline by doing the following:

1. Go to the person's profile in Mastodon
2. Click the button with three dots (looks like ︙ or ⋯)
3. Click "Hide Boosts" or "Hide Reblogs" (they mean the same thing)

The person will not know you've done this, and it won't hide their own posts.

If you change your mind and want to see their boosts, repeat the same process but select "Show boosts".

@FediTips This functionality is great and I'm using it a lot. I'm more interested in what people say than share.

@FediTips

I've found that the panphy.social client handles boosts really well. The devs have implemented a "Boost Carousel" that will show up in the home timeline every so often with several of the recent boosts from folks I follow, with arrow buttons to scroll through 5, 10 or 20 boosts. It doesn't clutter the TL, and it saves the extra step of muting someone's boosts. #panphy

@helplessduck @TheAngelsCove @FediTips yeah, phanpy is awesome, but gods, that first boost

@OctaviaConAmore @TheAngelsCove @FediTips

Yeah... it wasn't until after I posted it that I realized what I'd done. But it was done, so... 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

@helplessduck @OctaviaConAmore @FediTips

Yeah, I boosted before the image had even properly loaded in on my end, but at least we're all on the same page with phanphy. Liking the updated image better, though. 😉

@FediTips is there a way to see what accounts I might have done this to?

@elzurk

Unfortunately not, sorry. It isn't included on the standard mute list.

@FediTips the worst to me are people who boost seemingly 80% of the replies they get. 😣

@FediTips

1. i boost this tip
2. but i boost a lot
3. so people following me apply this tip
4. so the boost disappears

spooky

@FediTips
I boost a LOT, to share toots I think my network would be interested in.

@merileedkarr

Yeah, nothing wrong with that, helps posts to spread through the Fediverse.

It's just in case someone wants to switch off your boosts.

@FediTips I've wondered if it might be useful to suggest an option on Mastodon to voluntarily mark a post one has made as less important than average?

@rodneylives

That wouldn't really help here as it's about boosts by other people?

@FediTips Yeah, I was speaking more generally. If it was possible to mark a post as less important, and people could choose not to show those posts, it could be a voluntary way to reduce timeline clutter.

@rodneylives

Interesting idea 👍

To some extent that's what the "unlisted" post visibility is for, it lets anyone see a post but keeps it out of public timelines so it doesn't clog them up. (More info at https://fedi.tips/who-can-see-my-posts-in-mastodon-how-do-i-send-dms-in-mastodon/)

@FediTips

Useful, but does not solve the problem of seeing multiple boosts of the same original post from numerous people you already follow.

I want to hide boosts in my timeline of people I already follow. Server side.

Currently, I hide all boosts in my timeline, to keep it more readable.

But, this still wastes bandwidth.

I learned to never follow excessive boosters. How? You check their profile. If they are just constantly boosting (like a many dozens per day), and never otherwse interact, then easy decision.

That's a different issue dealt with here:

@FediTips

Yes, I saw your tip and noted that it may not work well because of the 40 limit. And, it does not work well. I can get 100 non-boosts per hour at times, so if I do not hide boosts, my timeline becomes cluttered with redundant boosts.

What would be best is to not show boosts of someones post that you already follow. And do it server side to save bandwidth.

But, from my reading on github, this has not been considered a priority.

If this functionality existed, then I could re-enable seeing boosts, and then deal with excessive boosters on an individual basis.

@SpaceLifeForm

I agree with you, and so do a lot of others as it's one of the most voted-for requests on the github.

Unfortunately it hasn't been fixed yet...

@FediTips

My concern is that it is intentional to not fix.

@FediTips

Don't get me wrong here. I would prefer to see boosts. But, when you follow a lot of people (over 2k), then there are many redundant boosts.

My estimate is that my timeline can be fed over 1000 boosts per day.

So, I hide them to make me timeline readable. This does not mean that I have time to read approximately 1000 non-boosts per day, but still, knocking out about 60% of my timeline actually does help, even though I know I will miss posts because of available reading time.

@FediTips I’m asking for clarification please. I’m an older activist and find that caring for aged husband and my own “growth pains,” prevents me from creating what I might like to express. (College student during Vietnam protests and Racial Equality movement-sadly still in process - women’s rights, reproductive rights, feminine porn, career choice, etc. etc. ). It is not as if it don’t have anything to say.
@FediTips /2 I read social/political world from McGhee’s The Sum of Us to Timothy Snyder. I still march, creating my own clever signs and email/call my Rep and Senators at least weekly. I don’t create a lot on Mastadon. Yep, I’m one of those who “favors, reposts and applauds the brilliant ideas, political commentary and heartfelt social commentary of others. IS THAT A BAD THING?
@FediTips /3 My re-posting has endeared me to so many. It is a small community of conscious, like-minded souls. People I NEED to hear from. I’m not certain I’ve even done the multiple post thread thing correctly but, HEY, old but not dead and supporting a LOVING HUMANITY. My last thought is, “Watch your hubris young man.” 💖

@RevLindsay

Hello!

Sorry, I should have phrased this better in the original post. Just to be absolutely clear:

IT IS TOTALLY FINE TO RE-POST! 👍

Re-posting (also known as "boosting") is a bedrock of this place, it is one of the key ways that servers notice content from each other.

Don't stop re-posting!

The original post should really have said "If someone boosts too much for your tastes". It's a matter of taste about how much is too much, this feature lets people of all tastes co-exist.

Indeed! My apologies for implying otherwise in the original post.
