Poll: Most Americans cool to Christian nationalism as its influence grows

The once-fringe ideology is prevalent in deeply red states at a time when the U.S. is increasingly diverse and less religious.

However, in some states, nearly 1 out of 2 Republicans wants some forms of a Christian nation. Surveys like this often cannot account for nuances in responses, though.

What surprises me here, though, is Montana and Wyoming. Not long ago, they weren't known for being particularly religious. They were not like the LDS strongholds of Utah and Idaho. They were never considered part of the Bible Belt. They were more of a live-and-let-live sort of Republicans.
